Air Marshal Kodandera Cariappa 'Nanda' Cariappa is a former Air Officer in the Indian Air Force. He served as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), South Western Air Command. He is the son of Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa, who was the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army post-independence.

Military career

Air Marshal Cariappa graduated from the National Defence Academy, Pune was commissioned as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force on 29 May 1957. As a young pilot, he qualified as a flying instructor. [1] He did 1000 hours of operational flying before undergoing the Flying Instructors' course in 1963. He stood first in merit in flying at Flying Instructors' School. At the flying training school where he was posted during 1963-65, he flew over 1000 hours and proved himself as an outstanding instructor. [2] He was a squadron leader with No. 20 Squadron during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. [3] He was shot down while carrying out air attacks during the war and was taken prisoner. President Ayub Khan, a former colleague of General Cariappa before the 1947 Partition, offered to release his son. [4] [5] But the general's terse reply was "The POWs are all my sons, look after them well." [6]

After repatriation K C Cariappa went on to helicopters for a short while, commanding No.111 Helicopter Unit at Hasimara during the 1971 War. He would later command No.8 Squadron in the mid 1970s at Pune. [3] He wrote a biography on his father, Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa in 2007. [6] [7] [8] He presently lives in his deceased father's house Roshanara in Madikeri. [9] He takes an active part in forest and wildlife conservation measures. [10] [11]

During the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965, the Indian and Pakistani Air Forces engaged in large-scale aerial combat for the first time. In the air war, which took place in September, both air forces conducted thousands of defensive and offensive sorties over Indian and Pakistani airspace. Both India and Pakistan claimed victory in the air war; Pakistan claimed to have destroyed 104 Indian aircraft and lost 19, and India claimed to have destroyed 73 Pakistani aircraft and lost 35 of its own. The air war ended in a stalemate.

No. 6 Squadron (Dragons) is a fighter squadron and is equipped with Jaguar IM/IS and based at Jamnagar Air Force Station.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ajjamada B. Devaiah</span> Indian Air Force officer

Squadron Leader Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya MVC is the only Indian Air Force officer to be posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC). The Maha Vir Chakra is the second highest wartime gallantry award, behind only to the Param Vir Chakra. During the 1965 India-Pakistan War, Devayya was part of a strike mission targetting the Pakistani airbase Sargodha when he was attacked by an enemy aircraft. He shot down the enemy pursuer's plane but in the process his aircraft was damaged and he went missing. Presumably he died in Pakistani territory. Twenty-three years later, in 1988, he was posthumously awarded the MVC award.

Air Marshal Rajiv Dayal Mathur, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC is a former officer in the Indian Air Force. He was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), Training Command. He assumed the office on 1 October 2020 succeeding Air Marshal Arvindra Singh Butola. He served as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), Eastern Air Command from 1 March 2019 to 30 September 2020. He superannuated on 31 July 2021.

He was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) Western Air Command when he was killed in the 1963 Poonch Indian Air Force helicopter crash. He served in the IAF from 1940 until his death in 1963. He was the theatre air commander commanding the air operations during the Annexation of Goa.
