Kalehe Territory is a territory in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. [2] Its administrative centre is the town of Kalehe on the western shore of Lake Kivu. Other important towns include Buguli, Bunyakiri, Kalangala, Kalungu, Minova, and Nyamasasa.

Geography

Kalehe Territory is located in the far eastern Congo on the western shores of Lake Kivu. The eastern part of Kahuzi-Biéga National Park is located in Kalehe Territory. [3]

Kalehe Territory borders the country of Rwanda to the east, across Lake Kivu. It borders the province of North Kivu (the territories of Walikale and Masisi) in the north; and the territories of Shabunda in the west, Kabare in the south, and Idjwi (an island in the middle of the Lake Kivu) also to the east. [4]

Flooding

During flooding on 2 to 4 May 2023 there was flooding in the region that destroyed 5,000 homes and killed about 400 people. The World Food Programme was aware that there were over 100,000 internally displaced people and 50,000 people were expected to need assistance. [5]

Administrative divisions

Kalehe Territory is subdivided into two chiefdoms: Buloho and Buhavu. The buhavu chiefdom which is located alongside lake Kivu, is the most populated place of Kalehe.Its populations are "Bantu" and their common language is "Kihavu".The Buhavu is led by a clan called "Bahande".This clan lead majorly villages and urban centres of the chiefdom. WE find in Ihusi, south part of Kalehe,the king's palace (mwami) called Kamirogosa. Note that Nyangezi Mugugu is the father of the journalist Elvis Elisha Nyangezi of the Bubandano Radio in Minova. Bushi is mainly a traditional region and an African ethnic group in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo ; mainly located in the South Kivu province. It lies along the Mitumba Mountains and includes the administrative territories of Walungu, Kabare, Kalehe, Mwenga, Idjwi and Uvira surrounding Bukavu, which is its main city. There are about 7-12 million inhabitants in the region speaking the Mashi or Shi language. The Bushi is also a kingdom that is organized into many localities or sub-chiefdoms.

Minova is a town in the Kalehe Territory, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is an important business center for farm-fishery products. It is very close to Idjwi Island, Masisi Territory, Lake Kivu on its North Western shore and is only 45 km from the Goma city. The town's development is linked with important refugee-related history, including those from Rwanda in 1994, those from Masisi in 1992–1997, and other surrounding areas in northern South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is known for being the site of the systematic rape of refugees by DRC troops. WE actually find many local organisations involved in the management of Gender Based Violence (GBV) working tirelessly to restore dignity to women and girls who were raped( Panzi Foundation DRC is one of them, and it is very active in Buzi -Bulenga area).

Bweremana (Bweremane) is a village in Kalehe Territory, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is on Lake Kivu 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of Minova via Route N-2.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kahuzi-Biéga National Park</span>

The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a protected area near Bukavu town in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is situated near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. Established in 1970 by the Belgian photographer and conservationist Adrien Deschryver, the park is named after two dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, which are within its limits. With an area of 6,000 square kilometres (2,300 sq mi), Kahuzi-Biega is one of the biggest national parks in the country. Set in both mountainous and lowland terrain, it is one of the last refuges of the rare species of Eastern lowland gorilla, an endangered category under the IUCN Red List. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1980 for its unique biodiversity of rainforest habitat and its eastern lowland gorillas. In 1997, it was listed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of the political instability of the region, an influx of refugees, and increasing wildlife exploitation.

Lemera is a town in the north-western part of the Uvira Territory in South Kivu Province in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is located 60 kilometers north of Bukavu, 90 kilometers southwest of the Rwandan and Burundian border. Kamanyola is a town located in the Ngweshe Chiefdom of the Walungu Territory, lies to the north of Uvira in the South Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Kamanyola has an elevation of 901 meters and is situated in close proximity to the suburb of Mwaro and the village of Mubombo, bordering Rwanda and Burundi.

Kaniola Groupement is a political administrative entity and one of 16 groupements (groupings) that constitute the Ngweshe Chiefdom of the Shi people. Kaniola Groupement has an elevation of 1800 meters and is located 64 km from Bukavu city and 12 km from the capital of Walungu Territory of the South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Incidentally, it borders the Kahuzi-Biéga National Park and the Nindja Chiefdom to the northeast, bordered by Izege and Walungu groupements to the east, bordered by Burhale and Mulamba groupments in the West.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ruzizi Plain</span> River valley in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Ruzizi Plain is the valley of the Ruzizi River, an area of the Western Rift Valley in the Uvira Territory of the South Kivu Province in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is strategically located between the Mitumba mountain chain on one side and the Ruzizi River, which separates the DRC from Burundi and Rwanda, on the other side. It is crossed by the Ruzizi River, which flows from Lake Kivu through the plain and into Lake Tanganyika. It covers an area of 175,000 hectares divided between Burundi, Rwanda and the DRC. In Burundi, the plain extends to the northern sector of Imbo. It is bounded by parallels 2°36′ and 3°26′ south latitude and by meridians 29°00′ and 29°26 east longitude—an area of 1025 km2. The Congolese side is bounded to the north by the plain of Bugarama (Rwanda), to the east by the plain of Imbo (Burundi), to the West by the chain of Mitumba and to the South by Lake Tanganyika. The region covers thus about 80,000 hectares with 80 kilometers in length.
