Kam Controls Incorporated is an R&D company based in Houston, Texas, United States manufacturing measurement instruments for producers and pipeline operators in the petroleum industry. [1] [3] [4] [5] The company manufactures instruments to be used in downstream, midstream and upstream operations in the petroleum industry, used in aviation, laboratory, marine, pipeline, production, refinery, storage and truck applications, including water in oil [6] and interface detectors, turbidity and moisture analyzers, samplers and static mixers. [7] [8] [9] The company is also a supplier for the oil shale production companies in the Eagle Ford and Marcellus Shale Plays. [10]
Kam Controls [11] [12] [13] was founded in 1983 when ExxonMobil approached company founder Kam Mohajer to design an instrument to measure the volume of oil in marine offloading that would be unaffected by sediment. [14] In response, the KAM UFM Ultrasonic Flow Meter was designed with no moving parts [15] [16]
The second product to be introduced was the KAM KF Karl Fischer Moisture Analyzer, a Karl Fischer titrator for hydrocarbons. [14] [17]
In May 2010, Kam Controls announced that it had successfully tested the Kam FAME Meter, [18] an instrument to measure the Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) amount in jetfuel. [19] This development followed Directive 2003/30/EC implemented in EU member states, which mandates addition of 5% FAME in automotive diesel fuel. [20] However, the international specification for FAME in jetfuel is 5ppm or less, with 30ppm for restricted usage. [21] Due to the presence of multi-fuel transport and distribution facilities, this raised concerns in the aviation industry including aircraft engine manufacturers. [22] The company founder and President Kam Mohajer claimed that tests were conducted in the 100, 200, 300, and 500ppm range. According to Mohajer, the instrument was able to measure FAME concentrations from 1ppm and higher. [23]
KAM Controls has made contributions to the Petroleum Industry through the invention of various measuring and mixing solutions. They have registered patents for two of their instruments: The KAM OWD Oil Water Detector [24] and the KAM SMP Static Mixing Plate. [25]
In meteorology, an anemometer is a device that measures wind speed and direction. It is a common instrument used in weather stations. The earliest known description of an anemometer was by Italian architect and author Leon Battista Alberti (1404–1472) in 1450.
Biodiesel is a form of diesel fuel derived from plants or animals and consisting of long-chain fatty acid esters. It is typically made by chemically reacting lipids such as animal fat (tallow), soybean oil, or some other vegetable oil with an alcohol, producing a methyl, ethyl or propyl ester by the process of transesterification.
Cetane number is an indicator of the combustion speed of diesel fuel and compression needed for ignition. It plays a similar role for diesel as octane rating does for gasoline. The CN is an important factor in determining the quality of diesel fuel, but not the only one; other measurements of diesel fuel's quality include energy content, density, lubricity, cold-flow properties and sulphur content.
The petroleum industry, also known as the oil industry or the oil patch, includes the global processes of exploration, extraction, refining, transportation, and marketing of petroleum products. The largest volume products of the industry are fuel oil and gasoline (petrol). Petroleum is also the raw material for many chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, synthetic fragrances, and plastics. The industry is usually divided into three major components: upstream, midstream, and downstream. Upstream regards exploration and extraction of crude oil, midstream encompasses transportation and storage of crude, and downstream concerns refining crude oil into various end products.
Yokogawa Electric Corporation is a Japanese multinational electrical engineering and software company, with businesses based on its measurement, control, and information technologies.
Total organic carbon (TOC) is an analytical parameter representing the concentration of organic carbon in a sample. TOC determinations are made in a variety of application areas. For example, TOC may be used as a non-specific indicator of water quality, or TOC of source rock may be used as one factor in evaluating a petroleum play. For marine surface sediments average TOC content is 0.5% in the deep ocean, and 2% along the eastern margins.
In liquids, the cloud point is the temperature below which a transparent solution undergoes either a liquid-liquid phase separation to form an emulsion or a liquid-solid phase transition to form either a stable sol or a suspension that settles a precipitate. The cloud point is analogous to the 'dew point' at which a gas-liquid phase transition called condensation occurs in water vapour to form liquid water. When the temperature is below 0 °C, the dew point is called the frost point, as water vapour undergoes gas-solid phase transition called deposition, solidification, or freezing.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is an Indian public sector undertaking in petroleum and natural gas industry, headquartered in Mumbai, and a subsidiary of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), which is owned by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.
Custody Transfer in the oil and gas industry refers to the transactions involving transporting physical substance from one operator to another. This includes the transferring of raw and refined petroleum between tanks and railway tank cars; onto ships, and other transactions. Custody transfer in fluid measurement is defined as a metering point (location) where the fluid is being measured for sale from one party to another. During custody transfer, accuracy is of great importance to both the company delivering the material and the eventual recipient, when transferring a material.
A gas detector is a device that detects the presence of gases in an area, often as part of a safety system. A gas detector can sound an alarm to operators in the area where the leak is occurring, giving them the opportunity to leave. This type of device is important because there are many gases that can be harmful to organic life, such as humans or animals.
The Verifier refers to a proprietary fuel gauge technology, used for advanced measurement of heating oil in residential and commercial tanks ranging from 1,000 – 20,000 gallons. First developed in 2005, by U.S. Energy Group’s Jerry Pindus, Verifier technology was granted Patent Approval 11/095,914 as “The Verifier Digital Fuel Gauge” from The United States Patent and Trademark Office on September 21, 2007. The Verifier is also ETL SEMKO certified.

Instrumentation is used to monitor and control the process plant in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. Instrumentation ensures that the plant operates within defined parameters to produce materials of consistent quality and within the required specifications. It also ensures that the plant is operated safely and acts to correct out of tolerance operation and to automatically shut down the plant to prevent hazardous conditions from occurring. Instrumentation comprises sensor elements, signal transmitters, controllers, indicators and alarms, actuated valves, logic circuits and operator interfaces.
