Karen Ann Holbrook (born November 6,1942,in Des Moines,Iowa) is the regional chancellor of University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee since January 2,2018. [1]
Holbrook earned her B.S. and M.S. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison,in zoology. After teaching biology at Ripon College,she earned a Ph.D. in biological structure from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1972,where she served as a postdoctoral fellow in dermatology,faculty member and research administrator. She then pursued further training in dermatology. She is an alumna of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
Holbrook was a professor of biological structure and medicine at University of Washington School of Medicine,where she became the first woman to be named associate dean at the UW School of Medicine,vice president for research and dean of the graduate school at the University of Florida,and senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Georgia.
From 2002 to 2007,she was the 13th presiding president of Ohio State University. During Holbrook's tenure,she worked with Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman to improve safety both on- and off-campus. This was in reaction to riots following a Michigan–Ohio State football game in 2002. [2] [3] Holbrook announced in June 2006 that she would depart Ohio State when her five-year contract was up in 2007 to spend more time with her husband,Jim. [4] Joseph A. Alutto,dean of the Max M. Fisher College of Business at Ohio State,replaced Holbrook as an interim president until Gordon Gee took his place as the new president. [5] [6]
While applying for a position of President at Florida Gulf Coast University in 2007,Holbrook lamented on the student culture at Ohio State. She remarked in a job interview that,"They think it's fun to flip cars,to really have absolute drunken orgies. ... I don't want to be at a place that has this kind of culture as a norm." [7] Holbrook later acknowledged that she might have exaggerated her comments. [8]
In 2017,while serving as executive vice president at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee,she replaced Terry Osborn as chancellor who was also serving as vice chancellor of academic affairs. From 2013 to 2016,she had served as senior adviser to the president of the University of South Florida system. [9]
Holbrook has served on the boards of several institutions. She also served as interim president of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University [10] prior to moving to the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

It is a principal city in the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota,Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. Downtown Bradenton is along the Manatee River and includes the Bradenton Riverwalk. Downtown Bradenton is also home to the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature.

New College of Florida is a public liberal arts college in Sarasota,Florida. The college is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. In 2023,the state government of Florida overhauled its board of trustees in an attempt to transform the school into a conservative institution. Since then,nearly 40% of faculty have resigned. New College has the smallest student population in the State University System of Florida with 669 students (2022).
State College of Florida,Manatee–Sarasota (SCF) is a public college with campuses in the Manatee and Sarasota counties of Florida. Part of the Florida College System,it is designated a "state college" because it offers a greater number of bachelor's degrees than community colleges. SCF is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Founded in 1957 as Manatee Junior College,it was known as Manatee Community College from 1985 to 2009.

Earlier,from 2014 to June 2020,he was the 15th president of The Ohio State University. He was the chancellor of the University of California,Irvine from 2005 to 2014,and has also served as vice president for health affairs for the University of California system. He is the first African American to head the University of California.
The John Glenn College of Public Affairs is a public policy and management school at Ohio State University. The Glenn College offers undergraduate,graduate and doctoral programs in public affairs. The Glenn College provides research,training and technical assistance to state,public and nonprofit organizations. The college is named after United States Senator and astronaut John Glenn. On January 30,2015,the Ohio State University Board of Trustees approved a change of status of the former John Glenn School of Public Affairs making the new John Glenn College of Public Affairs the 15th college at The Ohio State University.
The University of South Florida Sarasota–Manatee is a branch campus of the University of South Florida in Sarasota,Florida. USF Sarasota-Manatee was established in 1975 as a regional campus of the University of South Florida and gained separate accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and master's degrees in June 2011. It was consolidated with the other two USF campuses as of July 1,2020. Day,evening,weekend and online classes serve more than 14,000 students annually.
John Stuart Allen was an American astronomer,university professor and university president. He was a native of Indiana,and pursued a career as a professor of astronomy after receiving his bachelor's,master's and doctorate degrees. In 1953 Allen became the interim president of the University of Florida located in Gainesville,Florida,and subsequently became the founding president of the University of South Florida in Tampa,Florida.

Lakewood Ranch is a planned community and census-designated place (CDP) in southeastern Manatee County and northeastern Sarasota County,Florida,United States,consisting of approximately 31,000 acres (13,000 ha). It is part of the North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota,Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2020 census,the CDP had a population of 34,877.
Friends of Seagate Inc. was founded in the late 1980s by Kafi Benz as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Sarasota,Florida. The historic preservation group lead local efforts protect historic property in the Sarasota-Bradenton area from commercial development. The group later expanded its scope to include environmental conservation. Its most notable project was the preservation of Seagate,the former home of Cincinnati,Ohio,industrialist Powel Crosley Jr. and his wife,Gwendolyn,and its later owners,Mabel and Freeman Horton. In 2002 the organization tried to secure Rus-in- Ur'be,an undeveloped parcel of land in the center of the Indian Beach Sapphire Shores neighborhood,as a local park;however,as of 2014,real estate developers intend to build condominium units at the site.
State College of Florida Collegiate School (SCFCS) is a public charter school in Florida,United States. Established in 2010,it is part of and operates on State College of Florida's Bradenton and Venice campuses. It was created through a charter with the School District of Manatee County.
Terry A. Osborn is an American academic who is Professor of Education at the University of South Florida and an authority in applied linguistics and interdisciplinary curriculum. He served twice as Interim Chancellor,Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs,and was previously Dean of the College of Education at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. Osborn taught public school for six years. He was on the faculties of Fordham University,Queens College of City University of New York and the University of Connecticut.
Jinliu "Grace" Wang is a Chinese American engineer and academic administrator who serves as the 17th president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Wang also served as interim president of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute from July 1,2018 to November 2020.
