Karl Jaffary (born 1936) is a Canadian former municipal politician in Toronto,Ontario.
Jaffary was born in New Orleans and moved to Toronto with his family in 1940. He went to school in Toronto and attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute and University of Toronto Schools. He went to the University of Toronto and graduated from the Faculty of Law. He practised with Blake,Cassels &Graydon before starting his own firm in 1968.
After several years of practice at Houser Henry Loudon and Syron,Jaffary joined Gowlings in 1992 before continuing his municipal planning law practice as a sole practitioner near the turn of the century.
Jaffary was active with the federal New Democratic Party and served as vice-president from 1969 to 1973. Jaffary became active in local politics in 1968 when he became president of the Ward 2 Residents' Association in the Cabbagetown area. The association fought the city's plans to tear down housing for urban renewal. In the 1960s,Cabbagetown was a run down area of town. Since then many of the houses have been renovated and the neighbourhood is now gentrified and upscale.
Jaffary ran for Toronto City Council and became alderman [1] for Ward 7 in 1969. As senior alderman,he sat on both the city and Metro Toronto councils. He was re-elected in 1972 but decided not to run in the 1974 election. During his tenure,he was active in the reform wing of city council along with John Sewell. He was interested in civic organization and administration and became involved in city housing policy.
Cabbagetown is a neighbourhood in central Toronto,Ontario,Canada. Administratively,it is defined as part of the Cabbagetown-South St. Jamestown neighbourhood. It largely features semi-detached Victorian houses and is recognized as "the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in all of North America",according to the Cabbagetown Preservation Association.

Warring Kennedy was a Canadian politician and businessman who served as Mayor of Toronto from 1894 to 1895. He was born and educated in Ireland and immigrated to Toronto in 1857. He opened a dried goods company and participated in political organisastions and Methodist conferences. He was elected as alderman in the Toronto City Council,representing St. John's Ward,in 1871. He was unsuccessful in his first run for mayor in 1877,but was successful in his second attempt in 1894 and his reelection the following year. Kennedy's terms as mayor were negatively affected by an economic downturn in Toronto and allegations of corruption within the Toronto administration,including a report that accused Kennedy of improper acts. His company went bankrupt in 1895 and Kennedy left municipal office. He worked as an insurance agent and sat on the boards of various philanthropic organisations. He died in Toronto and is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

During the First World War the family moved to Winnipeg,Manitoba. A self described left-wing Liberal,May Birchard was a strong believer in the Canadian Social Gospel movement that originated in Winnipeg during the first part of the 20th century. In 1933,during the Great Depression,Birchard founded The Good Neighbours' Club to aid unemployed men. A few years later a branch was opened in Toronto. The organization continues to operate with a drop-in centre on Jarvis Street.
