Karl and the Marx Brothers is an English indie folk group from Derby, England. In 2013, they released their debut album Angry Folk on Furthest From The Sea recordings.

Career

Formed in 2011, the band's material is political in nature, tackling subjects such as the WikiLeaks scandal and Julian Assange ("Rhymes With Blancmange"), and the MPs' expenses scandal. The latter was the subject of the song "The Relative Innocence of David Laws" and caused some controversy in the MP's constituency. [1]

On 9 November 2012, Matt Mcguinness from the band was interviewed by Andy Potter on BBC Radio Derby. [2]

On 12 April 2013, the band released their debut album following a launch party at Derby Guildhall Theatre. [3] The album received a four star rating from Boff Whalley in R2 magazine. [4] In December of that year the band appeared on BBC Radio Derby on the Sally Pepper show. [5]

During the first half of 2014, the band toured the UK taking in dates in Nottingham, London, Liverpool, Oldham, Hartlepool, Portishead and Melbourne. [6] In February the band appeared in session for BBC Introducing in Derbyshire, [7] and also appeared on BBC Radio Nottingham. Later in the year they will be performing at the Furthest From The Sea Festival [8] in June and the Y Not [9] festival in August.

The band included percussion and a four-piece brass section. Bellowhead's bandmembers played more than 20 instruments among them, whilst all performers provided vocals.

Sam Carter is a British guitarist, singer and songwriter, originally from the English Midlands but more recently based in Sheffield. He has released four albums of mainly original material which fall loosely into the folk/roots category. Carter is the winner of the "Horizon" award for best newcomer at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2010. Highly regarded as an instrumentalist, contemporary Jon Boden of Bellowhead described him as 'the finest English-style finger-picking guitarist of his generation, and former BBC Radio Two folk show presenter Mike Harding wrote that Carter was "one of the most gifted acoustic guitarists of his generation.". As a songwriter, Carter marries a traditionally English narrative style with elements of American gospel, shapenote, R&B and folk-rock has been described as an "impressively original" performer. Some commentators consider that Carter's guitar and vocal style is similar to that of noted British iconoclasts John Martyn and Roy Harper, whilst his lyrical perspective has further invited comparison with the work of Richard Thompson.
