The Human Rights Party (HRP) was a left-wing political party that existed in Michigan from 1970 to 1977. The party achieved electoral success in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. It eventually expanded to include several other Michigan cities with large student populations. In 1975,the HRP became the Socialist Human Rights Party (SHRP),and it later merged with the Socialist Party of Michigan.
Toni Gayle Atkins is an American politician serving as the 51st and current President pro tempore of the California State Senate since 2018. A member of the Democratic Party,she previously served as the 69th Speaker of the California State Assembly from 2014 to 2016. Chris Kolb is a politician from Ann Arbor,Michigan and a former member of the Michigan State House of Representatives. A Democrat,Kolb represented the 53rd district,based in Ann Arbor,from January 2001 to January 2007. He was first elected in November 2000,and term limits prevented him from seeking a fourth two-year term in 2006. Kolb was the first openly gay member of the Michigan Legislature.
Based in San Francisco,California,the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club is a chapter of the Stonewall Democrats,named after LGBT politician and activist Harvey Milk. Believing that the existing Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club would never support him in his political aspirations,Milk co-founded the political club under the name "San Francisco Gay Democratic Club" in the wake of his unsuccessful 1976 campaign for the California State Assembly. Joining Milk in forming the club were a number of the city's activists,including Harry Britt,Dick Pabich,Jim Rivaldo,and first club president Chris Perry.

Anne Kronenberg is an American political administrator and LGBT rights activist. She is best known for being Harvey Milk's campaign manager during his historic San Francisco Board of Supervisors campaign in 1977 and his aide as he held that office until he and mayor George Moscone were assassinated. As an openly lesbian political activist,Kronenberg was noted for her instrumental role in the gay rights movement,both for Milk's campaign and in her own right,though she has since married a man.
Nancy Wechsler is an activist,writer,and former member of the Ann Arbor City Council,where she came out as a lesbian while serving her term. Elected to the City Council alongside fellow Human Rights Party candidate Jerry DeGrieck,both Wechsler and DeGrieck came out while serving,and are typically cited as the first openly LGBT elected officials in the United States.
Gerald (Jerry) C. DeGrieck is a public health manager and policy advisor in Seattle,Washington. He and Nancy Wechsler served together on the Ann Arbor City Council,1972–1974,while they were graduate students at the University of Michigan. In 1973,they simultaneously became the first openly gay elected officials in the United States.
The LGBT community in Metro Detroit is centered in Ferndale,Michigan,as of 2007. As of 1997,many LGBT people live in Ferndale,Pleasant Ridge,and Royal Oak. Model D stated in 2007 that there are populations of gays and lesbians in some Detroit neighborhoods such as East English Village,Indian Village,Lafayette Park,and Woodbridge and that the concentration of gay bars in Detroit is "decentralized".

The city itself has been described as "the original 'gay-friendly city'". The National LGBTQ Wall of Honor is an American memorial wall in Greenwich Village,Lower Manhattan,New York City,dedicated to LGBTQ "pioneers,trailblazers,and heroes". The wall is located inside of the Stonewall Inn and is a part of the Stonewall National Monument,the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to LGBTQ rights and history. The first fifty nominees were announced in June 2019,and the wall was unveiled on June 27,2019,as a part of the Stonewall 50 –WorldPride NYC 2019 events. Each year five additional names will be added.
The "rainbow wave" was a phrase coined in 2018 to describe the unparalleled number of openly LGBTQ+ candidates running for political office in the United States that year. The rainbow wave began during the 2018 U.S. midterm elections when over 400 LGBTQ+ candidates ran for office and a record-breaking 244 were elected.
