Katouna is a settlement in the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. Its population at the 2021 census was 1,634. [1] It has a large number of shops, cafes, a bank and school and so serves as the central settlement for the surrounding region. Between 1836 and 1912 it was the seat of the municipality Echinos. In 1912 it became an independent community, which was elevated to a municipality in 1986. In 1997 it was merged into the new municipality Medeon, of which it was the seat. In 2010 it was merged into the new Aktio-Vonitsa municipality. [2] Residents until recently were cultivating tobacco.[ citation needed ]

History

Katouna was a stop in Lord Byron's travels (1809-1810). He describes it as a well-built, large village, inhabited solely by Greeks, and also mentions a school house. [3]

Vamos is a small town and former municipality in the Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform "Kallikratis" it is a municipal unit, part of the municipality of Apokoronas, serving as its historical capital. It is situated on a small hill at an altitude of 190 metres above sea level, about 25 kilometres from Chania. In Vamos, one can find several restaurants, snack bars and shops in the village, as well as many public services, such as a fully equipped health center, schools, police station and the regional court for the regions of Apokoronas and Sfakia.

The municipalities of Greece are the lowest level of government within the organizational structure of the state. As of 2021, there are 332 municipalities, further divided into 1036 municipal units and 6136 communities. Thirteen administrative regions form the second-level unit of government. The regions consist of 74 regional units, which mostly correspond to the old prefectures. Regional units are then divided into municipalities. The new municipalities may be subdivided into municipal units, consisting of the pre-Kallikratis municipalities. These were further subdivided into municipal communities and local communities according to population, but are simply named communities since the entry into force of the Kleisthenis I Programme on 1 September 2019.

It is the capital and main town of the island of Lefkada, located in the northern and northeastern part of the island. The city had a population of 9,253 inhabitants at the 2021 census. The municipal unit has a land area of 60.628 square kilometres (23.409 sq mi) and a population of 13,540 (2021).

The municipal unit has an area of 213.217 km2. Population 3,311 (2021). The seat of the municipality was in Katouna. Medeon was named after the nearby ancient city of Medeon.

Avia is a popular tourist destination. It also has a large olive production. Avia is situated on the east coast of the Messenian Gulf, southeast of Kalamata, southwest of Sparta and northwest of Kardamyli.

Kastellia is a village in the municipal unit of Gravia, Phocis, Greece. It is situated at the western end of the wide Cephissus valley, at the foot of the mountains Giona and Oeta. It is 3 km northwest of Gravia, 19 km north of Amfissa and 23 km south of Lamia. The Greek National Road 27 passes southeast of the village. The railway from Athens to Thessaloniki passes east of the village, with the nearest railway station at Bralos, 4 km east.

Achyra is a village and a community in the Medeon municipal unit, Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. It was originally situated on a mountain slope, 7 km west of Katouna, 13 km east of Palairos and 37 km northwest of Agrinio but at some point in the 20th century a landslide took away part of the village and it was subsequently moved to its present location on the outskirts of Katouna.

George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron was an English poet and peer. He is one of the major figures of the Romantic movement, and is regarded as being among the greatest of English poets. Among his best-known works are the lengthy narratives Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; much of his shorter lyrics in Hebrew Melodies also became popular.

Xiromero is a municipality in the Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit, West Greece region, Greece. The seat of the municipality is the town Astakos. Its borders do not coincide with the historical region of Xiromero, which extends to parts of the territory of the neighbouring municipality of Aktio-Vonitsa and most notably the area around Katouna. The municipality has an area of 590.113 km2.

Loutraki is a seaside settlement in the Aktio-Vonitsa Municipality of the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. It has a very small resident population as most house owners are from the nearby village of Katouna, and use the area as their summer or seasonal residence, linked to the seasonal cultivation of olives, or earlier in the century of tobacco crops.

Sidirokastro, officially referred to as Sidirokastron, is a semi-mountainous settlement near Avlonas and is administratively part of the Municipality of Trifylia, in Messinia, Greece. Sidirokastro was the seat of the old Municipality of Avlona (1835–1912) and also of the former Municipality of Avlona of Messinia (1997–2010).

Avra is a village in Kalabaka municipality, Trikala, Thessaly, Greece.
