Kelsey Harrison Hospital is a State owned hospital in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State. It was originally called New Niger Hospital and retained that name until 2009 when it was revamped and renamed after Kelsey Harrison, an internationally renowned professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The facility officially opened to public in January 2013. [1]

Headquartered at Emenike Street, Diobu, Kelsey Harrison hospital offers a broad range of medical, maternity, accident and emergency, paediatrics, diagnostic imaging, neonatal care as well as the usual general surgery services to its users. [2] At present, the hospital has about 150 beds for patients and is managed by International Trauma and Care Centre (ITCC). [3] [4]

On 7 March 2013, Kelsey Harrison Hospital recorded its first successful delivery since undergoing a major upgrade. It was a 3.4kg infant girl named Judith Obilor. [5]

Kelsey Atangamuerimo Harrison is an emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynaecology and former vice-chancellor of University of Port Harcourt, who contributed immensely to studies of maternal health, especially during pregnancy. As a researcher at the University of Ibadan, he mapped out the effects of severe anaemia on the mother and her baby, and established the safety of treating gross anaemia by packed cell transfusion combined with rapidly acting diuretic. He was also part of a group that discovered the dangerous threat posed by sickle cell disease to maternal and fetal lives among Africans. In Zaria, the results of the work of a team he led, became the most powerful boost to international advocacy for better maternal and perinatal health in developing countries. Now retired, his life is summed up thus - an obstetrician and gynaecologist, a teacher and trainer, medical academic, university administrator, a sort of social activist, and a cricket and music fan.

The University of Port Harcourt is a university in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt. It was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt and was given University status in 1977. Rivers State University Teaching Hospital formerly known as Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital is a government owned hospital, named after Eldred Curwen Braithwaite, a British doctor and a pioneer of surgery. It is located in Old GRA, Rivers State a neighbourhood of Port Harcourt and is operated by Rivers State Hospital Management Board. It was established in March 1925 as Braithwaite Memorial Hospital and originally served as a medical facility for senior civil servants.
