Kenny Brightbill (born January 20, 1948), nicknamed the "Shillington Slingshot" and "Mr. Excitement" is a former NASCAR and professional dirt modified driver from Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. He has won 441 career professional races [5] and is also the all time wins leader of Reading Fairground Speedway with 135 career wins. [6] lBrightbill has won many of the most noted races for dirt track modifieds in the Northeastern United States, most notably 1988 Syracuse Miller High Life 300. [7]
Brightbill was born in Reading Pennsylvania, the son of Helen Irene (Long) and Elmer Samuel Brightbill. He began his racing career in 1967 at the age of 19, at that time the local speedway had the minimum racing age of 21 years old. Kenny could not wait 2 more years to get on the track so he told the race officials he was in fact 21. In honor of his stretch of the truth he choose to make his race number (#19) to honor his real age at the time of 19.
Although Brightbill scored over 441 wins at 41 different tracks all over the world, Brightbill's major notoriety stems from his popularity and dominance at Reading Fairgrounds Speedway. From his first Reading victory April 17, 1970 through June 24, 1979, 2nd to last race at the Fairgrounds, Brightbill won 135 times. In that nine year period, there were 480 feature races. Brightbill’s Reading record: 135 wins, 303 top-five finishes, 352 top-tens, and four championships earned Brightbill a large number of fans in and around Berks County. Additionally he won the Eastern States 200 in 1980, Super DIRT Week Syracuse 200 in 1988, 4 track championships and 43 wins at East Windsor Race Track, 37 wins at Susquehanna Speedway, 30 victories and 2 titles at Bridgeport Speedway, 29 wins at New Egypt Speedway, 8 wins at Grandview Speedway and the 1978 championship at Flemington Speedway. Kenny also gave dirt late model racing a try, registering 13 victories.[ citation needed ]
Kenny Brightbill has been inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame, [8] the New York State Stock Car Association Hall of Fame, [4] the Eastern Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame, [9] the Reading Fairgrounds Speedway Historical Society Home of Champions Hall of Fame [10] the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame, [11] and the YCRC Hall of Fame, [12]
Brightbill raced in 6 NASCAR Winston Cup Series races in his career, finishing with three top-tens. His first race came in 1974 at Pocono Raceway. It was a great achievement for the rookie NASCAR driver, who almost finished the race but ended up falling fall laps short to record a 10th-place finish. He then raced at Dover International Speedway later that season and finished 8th. He only had one NASCAR start in 1975, once again at Dover, racing for Donlavey Racing. It was the best day of Brightbill's NASCAR career, as he started 13th, finished all but 20 laps, and recorded his NASCAR best 7th-place finish. Brightbill did not race another NASCAR race until 1977, making 2 starts for car owner Jim Makar. He proved his racing skills were still superior, finishing every lap but the final six to end with a 12th place finish. He then raced in Dover, not fairing as well with a 40th place finish. His last career NASCAR race was in 1978 at Pocono Raceway. Brightbill started 26th in the field of 40, and ended the race finishing 23rd. [13]

Anthony Joseph Foyt Jr. is an American former racing driver who competed in numerous disciplines of motorsport. He is best known for his open wheel racing career, and for becoming the first four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500. He holds the most American National Championship titles in history, winning seven.
Russell William "Rusty" Wallace Jr. is an American former NASCAR racing driver. He won the 1984 NASCAR Cup series Rookie of the Year and the 1989 NASCAR Winston Cup Championship. For the accolades over the course of his successful career, Wallace has been inducted in the NASCAR Hall of Fame (2013), the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (2013), the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2014) and the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame (2010).
Kenneth Lee Wallace is an American race car driver and former reporter for Fox NASCAR. He retired from NASCAR in 2015 after driving in the national series since 1988. In a career spanning 25 years in NASCAR, Wallace had nine wins, all occurring in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Now retired from NASCAR competition, he continues to race on local dirt tracks across the country as a hobby.
John Ashley Thomson was an American racecar driver. Thomson was nicknamed "the Flying Scot." He won several championships in midgets and sprint cars before competing in Championship Car racing. He won the pole position for the 1959 Indianapolis 500.
Benjamin Stewart Parsons was an American NASCAR driver, and later an announcer/analyst/pit reporter on SETN, TBS, ABC, ESPN, NBC, and TNT. He became famous as the 1973 NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion, and was a 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee. He was the older brother of former NASCAR driver, car owner, and broadcaster Phil Parsons of Phil Parsons Racing.
David Gene Pearson was an American stock car driver, who raced from 1960 to 1986 in the former NASCAR Grand National and Winston Cup Series, most notably driving the No. 21 Mercury for Wood Brothers Racing. Pearson won the 1960 NASCAR Rookie of the Year award and three Cup Series championships. He never missed a race in the years he was active. NASCAR described his 1974 season as an indication of his "consistent greatness", finishing third in the season points having competed in only 19 of 30 races. Pearson's career paralleled Richard Petty's, the driver who has won the most races in NASCAR history. They accounted for 63 first/second-place finishes, with the edge going to Pearson. Petty had 200 wins in 1,184 starts, while Pearson had 105 wins in 574 starts. Pearson was nicknamed the "Fox" for his calculated approach to racing.
Donnie Allison is an American former driver on the NASCAR Grand National/Winston Cup circuit, who won ten times during his racing career, which spanned from 1966 to 1988. He is part of the "Alabama Gang", and is the brother of 1983 champion Bobby Allison and uncle of Davey Allison and Clifford Allison. He was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2009. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on January 19, 2024.
Michael McLaughlin is an American former professional stock car racing driver. Nicknamed "Magic Shoes", McLaughlin was a perennial fan favorite, winning the Most Popular Driver award in 1997. He also scored several wins and top-5 points finishes in the points standings in the NASCAR Busch Series.
Frank E. Schneider was an American stock car, modified, midget, and sprint car racer. He had one NASCAR Grand National Series victory at Old Dominion Speedway in 1958 driving a 1957 Chevrolet. He also won the 1952 NASCAR modified title, where it is suspected that he scored at least 100 wins. Schneider earned his nickname "The Old Master" through his ability to master anything with wheels.
James "Jimmy" Horton III is a racecar driver currently racing a dirt modified for the Halmar Racing Team weekly at the Orange County Fair Speedway and other major events across the northeast. He raced in 48 NASCAR Winston Cup races in eight seasons. He was a regular on the ARCA circuit in the 1980s and 1990s. Horton has won many of the most noted races for dirt track modifieds in the Northeastern United States.

Gary Balough is a retired American stock car racing driver who competed from 1979 to 2001. Balough has won more than 1000 races throughout his short-track career and has accumulated more than 20 wins in the All-Pro division.

The Syracuse Mile was a 1-mile (1.6 km) dirt oval raceway located at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York. Originally built for harness racing in 1826, the first auto race was run in 1903, making it the second oldest auto racing facility in United States history. The track and grandstands were torn down in 2016 by state government officials with the plan to modernize facilities.
Reading Fairgrounds Speedway (1924–1979) was a one half mile dirt/clay modified race track located in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The track opened September 24, 1924 and ran until June 29, 1979. It featured a regular weekly series of modified, sportsman modified, and late model stock car racing. The racetrack was replaced by the Fairgrounds Square Mall, which opened in 1980, closed in 2018, and was demolished in 2020.
Dave Watson is an American racing driver from Milton, Wisconsin. Watson was the 1977 USAC Stock Car Rookie of the Year. He raced five NASCAR Winston Cup races with one Top 10. Watson won in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), Grand American and IMSA.
