International relations theory is the study of international relations (IR) from a theoretical perspective. It seeks to explain behaviors and outcomes in international politics. The four most prominent schools of thought are realism,liberalism,constructivism,and rational choice. Whereas realism and liberalism make broad and specific predictions about international relations,constructivism and rational choice are methodological approaches that focus on certain types of social explanation for phenomena.
Robert Jervis was an American political scientist who was the Adlai E. Stevenson Professor of International Politics in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University. Jervis was co-editor of the Cornell Studies in Security Affairs,a series published by Cornell University Press.

Richard Ned Lebow is an American political scientist best known for his work in international relations,political psychology,classics and philosophy of science. He is Professor of International Political Theory at the Department of War Studies,King's College London,Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College,University of Cambridge,and James O. Freedman Presidential Professor Emeritus at Dartmouth College. Lebow also writes fiction. He has published a novel and collection of short stories and has recently finished a second novel.
The Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies (SIWPS) is a research center that is part of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs in New York. It was founded in 1951 by President of Columbia Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Institute of War and Peace Studies (IWPS) and was led for its first 25 years by Professor William T. R. Fox. It was given its current name in 2003. By its own description,the institute's researchers analyze "the political,military,historical,legal,economic,moral,psychological,and philosophical dimensions of international relations."
An audience cost,in international relations theory,is the domestic political cost that leaders incur from their constituency if they escalate a foreign policy crisis and are then seen as backing down. It is considered to be one of the potential mechanisms for democratic peace theory. It is associated with rational choice scholarship in international relations.
Kimberly Marten is an author and scholar specializing in international security,foreign policy,Russia,and environmental politics. She held the 5-year-term Ann Whitney Olin Professorship of Political Science at Barnard College from 2013 to 2018,and then returned to chair the Barnard Political Science Department for a second time from 2018-2021. She was the director of the Program on U.S.-Russia Relations at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute from 2015 to 2019,and the Harriman Institute published a profile of her career. Sandra Eilene Black is a Professor of Economics and International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. She received her B.A. from UC Berkeley and her Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. Since that time,she worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York,and as an assistant,associate,and ultimately full professor in the Department of Economics at UCLA before arriving at the University of Texas at Austin in 2010. She is currently a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER),a research affiliate at IZA Institute of Labor Economics,and a nonresident senior fellow at Brookings Institution. She served as a Member of Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers from August 2015 to January 2017.
Séverine Autesserre is a French-American author and researcher. She writes about war and peace,peacebuilding,peacekeeping,humanitarian aid,the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo,and African politics. Autesserre is a professor and Chair of Political Science at Barnard College,Columbia University,where she specializes in international relations and African studies. She previously worked for international humanitarian and development agencies.
In international relations,credibility is the perceived likelihood that a leader or a state follows through on threats and promises that have been made. Credibility is a key component of coercion,as well as the functioning of military alliances. Credibility is related to concepts such as reputation and resolve. Reputation for resolve may be a key component of credibility,but credibility is also highly context-dependent.
In international relations,coercion refers to the imposition of costs by a state on other states and non-state actors to prevent them from taking an action (deterrence) or to compel them to take an action (compellence). Coercion frequently takes the form of threats or the use of limited military force. It is commonly seen as analytically distinct from persuasion,brute force,or full-on war.
Virginia Page Fortna is an American political scientist,a specialist in the study of peace negotiations. She is currently the Harold Brown Professor of U.S. Foreign and Security Policy at Columbia University. She is the recipient of the 2010 Karl Deutsch Award from the International Studies Association.

Peter Clement is an American political scientist and former US intelligence officer. He is a Senior Research Scholar and interim director of the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at the School of International and Public Affairs,Columbia University.
Zack Cooper is an American national security and foreign policy analyst currently serving as a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute,an adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University,and a lecturer in Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He also serves on the advisory boards of the Open Technology Fund and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies' Center on Sanctions and Illicit Finance.
