Kevin Penkin (born 22 May 1992) is a British-born Australian composer, primarily for video games and anime. He is best known for composing the score of the anime Made in Abyss , which won Best Score at the 2nd Crunchyroll Anime Awards, and the score for the Tower of God anime adaptation, which won Best Score at the 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Biography

Penkin was born on 22 May 1992 in the United Kingdom, [2] [3] and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. [4] Penkin's interest in video game music started from when he first heard the "Phendrana Drifts" theme from Metroid Prime ; [4] in a 2012 interview, he referred to the theme's electronic synths and acoustic instruments as "absolute bliss". [4]

Penkin began his career with composition credits in the 2011 short films Play Lunch and The Adventures of Chipman and Biscuit Boy. [4] In the same year, Penkin composed the soundtrack of the video game Jūzaengi: Engetsu Sangokuden; this soundtrack represented Penkin's first collaboration with Nobuo Uematsu. [4] Penkin has continued to collaborate with Uematsu in titles such as Norn9 and Defender's Quest II: Mists of Ruin. [5]

In 2013, Penkin received a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Music Technology at Edith Cowan University's Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. In 2015, Penkin graduated from the Royal College of Music with a Master of Composition degree in Composition for Screen. [6] His studies were supported by a grant from the Tait Memorial Trust as the inaugural Tait Scholar at the Royal College of Music. [7]

In 2016, Penkin collaborated with Kinema Citrus on the Norn9 anime and the Under the Dog original video animation soundtracks. [8] Penkin's relationship with Kinema Citrus continued through to 2017 for the soundtrack of Made in Abyss , [8] winning the 2017 Crunchyroll Anime Award for Best Score with it. [1] In 2018, Penkin composed the score for the video game Florence . [9] Penkin composed the music for Kinema Citrus' anime adaptation of The Rising of the Shield Hero and NetEase's VR game Nostos in 2019. [10] He composed the score for the 2020 anime adaptation of the South Korean webtoon Tower of God . [11] Penkin was working with artist Takashi Murakami on the sequel to the movie Jellyfish Eyes , but the project was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [12] In 2021, Penkin composed the score for "The Village Bride" episode in the Disney+ animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions . [13]

Penkin lived in the United Kingdom for some time, [8] but now lives in Melbourne, Australia. [14]

Final Fantasy is a media franchise created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and owned by Square Enix that includes video games, motion pictures, and other merchandise. The series began in 1987 as an eponymous role-playing video game developed by Square, spawning a video game series that became the central focus of the franchise. The music of the Final Fantasy series refers to the soundtracks of the Final Fantasy series of video games, as well as the surrounding medley of soundtrack, arranged, and compilation albums. The series' music ranges from very light background music to emotionally intense interweavings of character and situation leitmotifs.

Kenichiro Fukui is a Japanese video game composer and electronic musician. Before working at Square Enix, he was employed at Konami. He was also an arranger and a keyboardist in the band The Black Mages. Additionally, Fukui arranged Angela Aki's "Kiss Me Good-Bye" from Final Fantasy XII. In October 2007, he left Square Enix to become a lecturer, although he continued to work with The Black Mages until the band dissolved in 2010, and continued to do freelance work with video games. His Konami Kukeiha Club nickname was "Funiki Fukui". He lives in Yokohama, Japan.

<i>Norn9</i> 2013 otome game

Norn9 is a 2013 otome game for PlayStation Portable. It was developed by Otomate and published by Idea Factory. A PlayStation Vita port, entitled Norn9: Var Commons, was released on December 11, 2014. A fan disc titled Norn9: Last Era has been announced and was released on April 2, 2015. On March 2, 2014, it was announced that an anime adaptation was in the works. The anime ran from January 7 to March 31, 2016.

<i>Under the Dog</i> 2016 original video animation

Under The Dog is a 2016 Japanese original video animation. Originally a collaborative project between Creative Intelligence Arts and Kinema Citrus, and later a project solely produced by Kinema Citrus, it is a Kickstarter-funded anime project, released on August 1, 2016. The anime was supposed to be set in Neo Tokyo in the year 2025, five years after a terrorist attack on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. To combat future threats, the United Nations force teenagers possessing special abilities into fighting those threats. One member, Anthea Kallenberg, seeks to discover her true identity.

The Rising of the Shield Hero is a Japanese light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi. Originally published as a web novel in the user-generated novel site Shōsetsuka ni Narō, the series has since been published by Media Factory with an expanded story-line featuring illustrations by Seira Minami. As of June 25, 2019, 22 volumes have been published.

Made in Abyss is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi. <i>The Rising of the Shield Hero</i> season 1 Season of television series

The Rising of the Shield Hero is an anime television series produced by Kinema Citrus and directed by Takao Abo, with Keigo Koyanagi handling series composition, Masahiro Suwa designing the characters, and Kevin Penkin composing the music. The first season adapts the first five volumes of the light novel series of the same title written by Aneko Yusagi. The first season ran from January 9 to June 26, 2019, on AT-X and other networks. The season ran for 25 episodes and adapted the first five volumes of the light novel series, including parts from volume 6. It uses four pieces of theme music: two opening themes and two ending themes. The first opening theme is "Rise", performed by Madkid, while the first ending theme is "Kimi no Namae" (きみの名前), performed by Chiai Fujikawa. The second opening theme is "Faith", also performed by Madkid, while the second ending theme is "While I'm Next to You", performed by Fujikawa. For episode 4, Asami Seto sang an insert song titled "Falling Through Starlight" as her portrayed character Raphtalia.
