Kiandra "KiKi" Layne (born December 10, 1991) [1] is an American actress. [2] She is best known for her starring roles in such films as the romantic drama If Beale Street Could Talk (2018), the drama Native Son (2019), [3] the action superhero film The Old Guard (2020), [4] and the romantic comedy Coming 2 America (2021). Early life

Layne is from Cincinnati, Ohio. [6] She earned a BFA in acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University in 2014.

In a 2018 interview with Vanity Fair , Layne said that she was always acting growing up and that her favorite movie as a child was The Lion King . She said, "I used to watch it every day and create these extravagant stories with my Barbies and stuffed animals." [7]

Career

Layne's first acting role was with Lena Waithe in the pilot for the drama series The Chi , filmed in 2015. [7]

She has modeled for the fashion brand Kate Spade New York. [8]

Layne's breakout role was in Barry Jenkins' 2018 drama If Beale Street Could Talk . [9] She starred in the 2019 screen adaptation of Richard Wright’s 1940 novel Native Son , [10] then alongside Charlize Theron in 2020's The Old Guard , [11] directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. [12]

Layne was featured in composer Max Richter's Voices , which was inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The album contains readings of the Declaration by Eleanor Roosevelt and Layne, with a further 70 readings by people around the world.

In 2021, Layne joined the cast alongside Eddie Murphy in the Amazon Prime sequel Coming 2 America . [13]

Layne stars as Detective Ellie Steckler in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers .

Personal life

Layne is currently in a relationship with Ari'el Stachel, whom she met on the set of Don't Worry Darling in the fall of 2020. [14]

If Beale Street Could Talk (Original Motion Picture Score) is the score album to the 2018 film of the same name directed by Barry Jenkins based on James Baldwin's 1974 novel of the same name. Featuring original music written and composed by Nicholas Britell, the film marked his second collaboration with Jenkins after the Academy Award-winning Moonlight (2016). According to Britell, he used two different soundscapes to depict the relationship between Clementine "Tish" Rivers (KiKi Layne) and Alonzo "Fonny" Hunt (Stephan James) as well as the horrors of alleged accusation over Fonny, and the aftermath surrounds. The primary instruments used in most of the scores, were strings and brass to depict the relationship, while orchestra and jazz also accompany the score.

The Old Guard is a series of graphic novels created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández and published by Image Comics. It has released over 16 issues from three series and a film adaptation from Netflix and Skydance Media with a sequel in the works. It follows a group of immortal soldiers, led by a +6,000-year-old woman named Andromache of Scythia (Andy), who have been around for potentially thousands of years and have formed a group known as The Old Guard.
