History

The event was established in 1911, and it was founded to commemorate the coronation of King George V.

The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and for a period the King George Stakes was classed at Group 3 level.

The car manufacturer Audi sponsored the race from 2005 to 2011, and for several years it was known as the Audi Stakes. It was sponsored by Gordon's Gin in 2012 and by Betfred since 2013. It was promoted to Group 2 status in 2010. [1]

The King George Stakes is currently held on the fourth day of the five-day Glorious Goodwood meeting. The leading participants often go on to compete in the Nunthorpe Stakes, and the last to win both races in the same year was Battaash in 2019.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tetratema</span> Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Tetratema was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from May 1919 until October 1921 he won thirteen of his sixteen races, include the all twelve of his starts over the sprint distances of five and six furlongs. He was unbeaten in five races in 1919, including the Molecomb Stakes, Champagne Stakes, and Middle Park Stakes, and was the highest-rated two-year-old in Britain by a record margin. In the following year he had enough stamina to win the Classic 2000 Guineas over a mile, but failed to stay when unplaced in both The Derby and the Eclipse Stakes. He then returned to sprinting and won his remaining two races of 1920 and all four in 1921. His successes in this phase of his career included the King's Stand Stakes, July Cup and two runnings of the King George Stakes.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tiffin (horse)</span> Thoroughbred racehorse

Tiffin was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare, who was undefeated in a career of eight races. Tiffin won five races in 1928 including the National Breeders' Produce Stakes at Sandown Park and the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket and was the highest-rated British two-year-old of either sex. Her three-year-old season was disrupted by illness and injury, but she won all three of her starts, proving herself the year's best sprinter with wins in the July Cup at Newmarket and the King George Stakes at Goodwood. At her peak she was regarded as one of the fastest racehorses in the world. At the end of her racing career she was retired to stud where she produced one foal before dying in 1931.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Battaash</span> Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Battaash is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. A specialist sprinter who usually competes at the minimum distance of five furlongs, he is noted for his exceptional speed and unpredictable temperament. He won once from five starts as a juvenile in 2016 and was gelded in an attempt to improve his behaviour. In the following year he emerged as one of the best sprinters in the world, winning the Scurry Stakes, Coral Charge and King George Stakes before ending the season with an emphatic win in the Prix de l'Abbaye. In 2018 he won the Temple Stakes and recorded a second victory in the King George Stakes. As a five-year-old he won a second Temple Stakes and a third King George Stakes before producing his best performance of the season to take the Nunthorpe Stakes. In 2020 he was unbeaten in three starts, namely the King's Stand Stakes, King George Stakes and Nunthorpe Stakes.
