Kirinyaga University is a public university situated in Kutus Kerugoya in Kirinyaga County, Kenya. [1] [2]

History

The university has its roots in the Kirinyaga Technical Institute. In 2012 it became a constituent college of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and was renamed Kirinyaga University College. In October 2016 the university was granted the charter to operate as administratively independent university by the president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta among eight other universities. After becoming chartered, senior counsel Fred Ojiambo was appointed as chancellor and Prof. Mary Ndung'u as vice chancellor. [3] [4] [5]

Kerugoya is the biggest town in Kirinyaga County. Kerugoya is located 10 kilometres east of Karatina and 40 kilometres west of Embu. It is situated in the former District of Kirinyaga. Travel directions by road from Nairobi, is through Thika road past Thika, Kenol and Makuyu. The road leads through Makutano until Sagana town, where a road branches off the East towards Kagio town up to Kirinyaga University branching North towards the town.

The university has a strong research interest in the areas of biotechnology and engineering. Notable alumni include Dr. Paul Chepkwony, the first Governor of Kericho County in Kenya and a former lecturer, Emma Miloyo, a prominent Kenyan architect and the first female President of the Architectural Association of Kenya, as well as Aden Duale, the former Leader of Majority in the 11th Kenyan Parliament among others.

Juja is a town in Kiambu County in Kenya. It is the home town for Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). It is also a constituency in Kiambu county, currently represented in parliament by Hon. George Koimburi following the demise of the late Hon. Francis Munyua Waititu. The MCA is Kalpesh Jayantilal Shah, who represents the people of Juja Ward at the County Government.

Kisii University is a public university located in Kisii. It was founded in 1965 as a primary teachers’ training college on a 61-acre land that was donated by the County Council of Gusii. The college continued up to 1983 when it was upgraded to a secondary teachers’ college to offer Diploma programmes.

Reuben Sechele Nyangweso is a Kenyan politician who was a member of Kakamega County Assembly in Kenya representing Butsotso South. He was the first Leader of majority in the Assembly until 2014. He now holds the office of Chairman of Chairman of the County Public Service Board. He is the vice chair of the Liaison committee and a member of the labor committee Kakamega County Assembly he was elected to the County Assembly under the CORD coalition through the Orange Democratic Movement where he has been the deputy Chair for Lurambi since 2008 In the capacity as first leader of majority, Reuben presented the first ever County budget for approval by the Assembly.

Murang'a University of Technology (MUT) is the successor of Murang'a University College (MRUC), a former constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) after being elevated from Murang'a College of Technology (MCT). The university is located 1.5 km from Murang'a town in Muranga County, 85 km northeast of Nairobi, 70 km southeast of Nyeri and 50 km southwest of Embu.

Simon Gicharu is an educationalist and founder of Mount Kenya University, which is East and Central Africa’s largest private university. He was born in 1964 in Gathiruini village, Kiambu County, Kenya. He is the first in a family of seven. Gicharu is also the Chairman of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation and National Private Universities Owners Association of Kenya. He is the founder of Equip Africa Institute and patron of the Mount Kenya University Graduate Enterprise Academy. He is also a board member at Thika Water and Sewerage Company, and the patron of Inter Universities Rover Moot under the Kenya Scouts Association. In 2015, Gicharu was named the Eastern African Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and subsequently inducted into the Ernst and Young Hall of Fame. He is married with three children.

Sylvia Shitsama Nyamweya, is a Kenyan consultant neurosurgeon at the Kenyatta National Referral Hospital. She is the first female neurosurgeon in Kenya and one of a handful of female neurosurgeons in the country.

Njuri Ncheke is the supreme governing council of elders for the Meru people of Kenya. Also filling a judicial role, it is the apex of the Meru traditional judicial system and their edicts apply across the entire community.

Aisha Jumwa Karisa Katana is a Kenyan politician currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary, Public Service, Affirmative Action and Gender in Kenya. Cecilia Wangechi Mwathi was a Kenyan mathematician and union activist. She was the first woman in Kenya to become a mathematics professor, and was known both for her activism for higher education and for inspiring Kenyan girls to study science, technology, and mathematics.

Peter Waweru Kamaku is a Kenyan football referee, academic administrator and researcher. He has been a referee in Kenyan Premier League since 2013 and a FIFA listed referee since 2017. He is also a professor of pure mathematics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya.
