The Kouyou River is a minor river in central Republic of the Congo. Its source is the confluence of several streams. It is a tributary of the Likouala-Mossaka, which in turn feeds into the Congo River.

Matadi is the chief sea port of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital of the Kongo Central province, adjacent to the border with Angola. It had a population of 245,862 (2004). Matadi is situated on the left bank of the Congo River, 148 km (92 mi) from the mouth and 8 km (5.0 mi) below the last navigable point before the rapids that make the river impassable for a long stretch upriver. It was founded by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1879.

The Mbochi are descendants of the Bantu people. Their language originates from the regions of the African Great Lakes where they began, after a long migration from the east to the centre, over the years, until 1850. This central African ethnic group as a population is concentrated in the northern region of the Republic of the Congo. The current Congolese president, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, as well as many senior government officials, belong to this group. Mbochi is the traditional language spoken in the northern regions of la Cuvette also in the region of the Plateaux.

1987 Republic of the Congo coup détat attempt Failed coup détat attempt

From July to September 1987 forces loyal to Denis Sassou Nguesso defeated Kouyous forces which attempted to overthrow his regime. Pierre Anga, one of the coup leaders, fled to Owando where he was killed on September 6, 1987 ending the coup.
