Kumawood is a privately owned movie and awards company [1] that is based in Kumasi, Ghana. [2] [3] It was founded by Samuel Kwabena Darko, a Ghanaian businessman and entrepreneur. [4]

Kumawood was incorporated as a Limited liability company in 2006; soon after, a prominent film industry emerged, eventually becoming the most recognizable film company in the Ghana.[ citation needed ]

The company has been lucrative because of their consistency in producing and providing good quality content in Ghanaian movie space. [5] The language mostly spoken is Akan, subtitle translations are available. [6] [7] [8] [9]

Kumawood owns a television platform, Kumawood TV, which airs on Multi TV and also a Kumawood app which has more than 100,000 installs. [10]

Ghana Movie Awards is an annual film award to recognise excellence in the Ghanaian film industry. The first edition was held on 25 December 2010 at the Accra International Conference Center. It’s only in 2017 that the ceremony wasn’t held due to the franchise being given to Zylofon media that year. The Award Sheme was founded by Ghanaian actor Fred Nuamah in 2009.

Rok Studios is a Nigerian film production company. Its production studios is based in Anthony Village, Lagos. The company was founded in August 2013 by Mary Remmy Njoku. In addition to its numerous films, Rok Studios has produced over 12 TV series.

Cinema of Ghana also known as the Ghana Film Industry nicknamed Ghallywood, began when early film making was first introduced to the British colony of Gold Coast in 1923. At the time only affluent people could see the films, especially the colonial master of Gold Coast. In the 1950s, film making in Ghana began to increase. Cinemas were the primary venue for watching films until home video became more popular. Amakye and Dede is a Ghanaian romantic comedy movie released in 2016 and directed by Kofi Asamoah. The movie is centered on two best friends who fell in love with the same girl. The film sold the most tickets on the date of it was premiered. The movie was themed as the “Easter Movie” because it was premiered during Easter on 26 March, 2016 at the Silverbirds Cinemas West Hills Mall and Accra Mall.

John Evans Kwadwo Bosompem (1940–2002) also professionally known Santo or Bob Santo was a Ghanaian comedian and actor. He featured in movies speaking Akan. He usually acted with his close compatriot, Judas.
