Terapontidae family of fishes

Grunters or tigerperches are fishes in the family Terapontidae. The majority of terapontids are exclusively freshwater species, found in streams of Australia and New Guinea. A minority of species are found in estuarine and shallow coastal waters in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific. They grow up to 80 cm in length and feed on fishes and invertebrates.

A genus is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms, as well as viruses, in biology. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus.

Endemism Ecological state of being unique to a defined geographic location or habitat

Endemism is the ecological state of a species being unique to a defined geographic location, such as an island, nation, country or other defined zone, or habitat type; organisms that are indigenous to a place are not endemic to it if they are also found elsewhere. The extreme opposite of endemism is cosmopolitan distribution. An alternative term for a species that is endemic is precinctive, which applies to species that are restricted to a defined geographical area.

Appearance and behavior

Adults are silver-grey with horizontal dark stripes and yellowish fins. It can reach up to 11.5 cm (4.5 in) in standard length, making them one of the smallest species of grunters. [1] Females as small as 5.6 cm (2.2 in) have carried eggs, showing that it reach maturity at a smaller size than all other grunters. [1] It is typically found in groups. [1] Little is known about its feeding behavior, but one specimens had a stomach filled with insect larvae. [1]

Fish measurement is the measuring of the length of individual fish and of various parts of their anatomy. These data are used in many areas of ichthyology, including taxonomy and fisheries biology.
