Laura Veendapi McLeod-Katjirua is a Namibian politician who has been Governor of the Khomas Region since 2012 and Deputy Secretary General of SWAPO since 2012. Previously she was Governor of Omaheke Region from 2001 to 2012. She was transferred to Khomas Region by President Hifikepunye Pohamba after she was elected as Deputy Secretary General of SWAPO on December 2,2012.
Laura McLeod grew up in Gobabis,the regional capital of Omaheke. She went into Zambian exile in 1975 while she still was a teenager and completed her secondary education there at Nyango Education Centre in 1978. She graduated with a diploma in Public Administration from the United Nations Institute for Namibia,and with a Teacher's Diploma from the National Institute for Public Administration in 1982,both located in Lusaka. McLeod then stayed in Botswana,Angola,and East Germany and returned to Namibia in 1989. Upon Namibian independence in 1990,she worked as an agricultural technician. [2] [3]
McLeod was elected Regional Councillor for Omaheke Region in 2001,and Governor in 2002. She was the first female Governor of Omaheke. In the same year she was elected to the SWAPO Central Committee. [3] In December 2012 she was elected as SWAPO Deputy Secretary-General,a position considered number four in the SWAPO hierarchy. [4]
McLeod-Katjirua has one son and one daughter. [2]
The South West Africa People's Organisation,officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia,is a political party and former independence movement in Namibia. Founded in 1960,it has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. The party continues to be dominated in number and influence by the Ovambo ethnic group.
Khomas is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its name refers to the Khomas Highland,a high plateau landscape that dominates this administrative unit. Khomas is centered on the capital city Windhoek and provides for this reason superior transportation infrastructure. It is located in the central highlands of the country and is bordered by the Erongo region to the west and the northwest and by the Otjozondjupa region to the north. To the east is the Omaheke region,while in the south is the Hardap region. The region is characterized by its hilly countrysize and many valleys. It has well-developed economical,financial,and trade sectors. Khomas Region occupies 4.5% of the land area of Namibia but has the highest population of any of its regions (16.2%). Khomas is one of only three Namibian regions to have neither shoreline nor a foreign border.
Otjozondjupa is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its capital is Otjiwarongo. The region further contains the municipalities of Okahandja and Grootfontein and the towns Okakarara and Otavi. As of 2020,Otjozondjupa had 97,945 registered voters.
Omaheke is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia,the least populous region. Its capital is Gobabis. It lies in eastern Namibia on the border with Botswana and is the western extension of the Kalahari desert. The self-governed villages of Otjinene,Leonardville and Witvlei are situated in the region. As of 2020,Omaheke had 48,594 registered voters.
Gobabis is a city in eastern Namibia. It is the regional capital of the Omaheke Region,and the district capital of the Gobabis electoral constituency. Gobabis is situated 200 km (120 mi) down the B6 motorway from Windhoek to Botswana. The town is 113 km (70 mi) from the Buitepos border post with Botswana,and serves as an important link to South Africa on the tarred Trans-Kalahari Highway. Gobabis is in the heart of the cattle farming area. In fact Gobabis is so proud of its cattle farming that a statue of a large Brahman bull with the inscription "Cattle Country" greets visitors to the town. Gobabis also has its own local Airport.
Khomasdal North is a constituency in Windhoek in the Khomas Region of Namibia. As of December 2019 it had 25,550 registered voters. The constituency consists of parts of the suburbs Khomasdal,Katutura,and Otjomuise. It had a population of 43,921 in 2011,up from 27,950 in 2001.
Hidipo Livius Hamutenya was a Namibian politician. A long time leading member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),Hamutenya was a member of the Cabinet of Namibia from independence in 1990 to 2004,serving in several important ministerial portfolios. He was defeated in a bid for the party's presidential nomination in 2004 and left SWAPO to form an opposition group,the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP),in 2007. He was elected to the National Assembly of Namibia with RDP in the 2009 general election. He was forced to step down as RDP president on 28 February 2015 and rejoined SWAPO on 28 August 2015.
Pendukeni "Penny" Iivula-Ithana is a Namibian politician who served as the secretary general of SWAPO,Namibia's ruling party,from 2007 to 2012. She was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia in 1989 and has been a member of Parliament and member of cabinet since independence in 1990.
Marten Nenkete Kapewasha is a Namibian diplomat and politician. A member of the SWAPO Central Committee since 1991,Kapewasha was appointed Namibia's High Commissioner to India in September 2005 following a six-year stint in the same position in Russia.
Doreen Nampiye Sioka is a Namibian politician. She is member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 1994 for the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),and a member of the cabinet since 2005,serving as Minister of Gender Equality,Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare.
Lempy Lucas,also:Lukas,is a Namibian politician. A member of the National Assembly from 2000 until 2015,Lucas is a member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). She has held a number of Deputy Minister positions in Namibia's government,she currently is Deputy Minister of Agriculture,Water and Forestry. She had previously been a SWAPO Party Youth League activist.
Bernhardt Martin Esau,also Bernhard or Bernard,is a Namibian politician. A member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),Esau has been a member of the National Assembly since being nominated by President Sam Nujoma and subsequently elected in the 1994 Namibian general election.
Nora Schimming-Chase was a Namibian politician and Namibia's first ambassador to Germany from 1992 to 1996. After changing her party membership from South West Africa National Union (SWANU) to Congress of Democrats (CoD),Schimming-Chase became a member of the National Assembly of Namibia from 2000 to 2010.
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is a Namibian politician who is the Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia since March 2015. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwa,the current SWAPO vice president,has retained her position,and she is set to become the party's first female presidential candidate in November 2024. She has also been serving as Namibia's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since December 2012. From March 2010 to December 2012,she was Minister of Environment and Tourism. Nandi-Ndaitwah is a member of SWAPO,Namibia's ruling party,and a long-time member of the National Assembly. In 2017,Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected vice-president of the Swapo Party at the party's 6th Congress. She is the first woman to serve in that position.
Festus Ueitele is a Namibian politician who has been Governor of Omaheke Region from April 2013 to April 2020. He was placed 49th on the SWAPO electoral list prior to the 2009 general election and,as SWAPO won 54 seats,he was elected to the National Assembly of Namibia. Prior to and following the 2004 general election,Ueitele was SWAPO's regional coordinator for Omaheke Region.
Margaret Natalie Mensah-Williams is a Namibian politician,diplomat,and prominent SWAPO member. She currently serves as Namibia's ambassador to the United States.
Rapama Kamehozu was a Namibian politician,teacher,and a member of the SWAPO political party. Kamehozu served as the governor of Otjozondjupa Region from 2011 to 2012 and as governor of Omaheke Region from December 2012 until his death on 23 March 2013.
Sirkka Namutenya Anneli Mwahafa Ausiku is a Namibian administrator and politician. She is the governor of Kavango West Region since 2014.
Sophia Shaningwa is a Namibian politician,currently serving as Secretary General of the SWAPO party of Namibia. She previously served as Minister for Urban and Rural Development from 21 March 2015 to February 2018 in President Hage Geingob's administration. when she was the minister of Urban and Rural Development her ministry was awarded a cheque by Samlam to eliminate the bucket toilet system,because sanitation and hygience is believed to be a major challenge in the rural areas. In 2017 Shaningwa was elected the Secretary-General of the Swapo Party. Shaningwa retained her position of the secretary general last year 30 November 2022 defeating Oshikoto Regional Councilor Armas Amukwiyu.
