Lauren Anne English (born April 22, 1989) is an American swimmer who represented the United States at the Pan Pacific Championships (2006), the World University Games (2007) and the Junior Pan Pacific Games (2005). English was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey and resides in Lincoln Park, New Jersey. She set the United States Open Record in the 50 Meter Backstroke. [1] She swam collegiately for the University of Georgia. Upon her retirement from higher level swimming she enrolled at New York University in nursing and later received a master's degree as an advanced practice nurse from Seton Hall University. She is now a Director of Patient Care at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

High school

Growing up in Montville, New Jersey, she attended Montville Township High School and was a four-time state champion in the 100 yard Backstroke, where she holds the state record. [2] [3] She was also state champion and held the New Jersey record in the 50 yard freestyle. [4] She also surpassed Kelly Hecking's 55.64 100 yard backstroke New Jersey record with a 55.57 in 2005. [5] She set the 100 meter (short course) backstroke national public high school record surpassing Tashy Bohm. [6] English was New Jersey Swimmer of the year twice and was named high school swimmer of the year by the National High School Coaches Association in 2007. She was a nine-time High School All American and a multiple Academic All American. [7] In addition to swimming for her high school team, she swam for the Cougar Aquatic Club.

At the turn of the decade, she was named one of the ten most outstanding female high school athletes in New Jersey of the past ten years. [8] In 2017 Lauren was inducted into the Montville High School Hall of Fame. [9]

College

At the University of Georgia she swam on their nationally ranked swim team under coach Jack Bauerle. [10] As a Freshman, though she reached the finals of the SEC Championships, made the all Freshman SEC team in two events, [11] and made NCAA cuts she labored the entire year under a serious shoulder injury and was unable to compete at the NCAA's. However, as a result of her academic and athletic performances she was named an Academic All American. [12] She did not compete in her sophomore year while rehabbing from an operation to correct the shoulder injury. She was a member of the University of Georgia team which won the SEC Championships in 2010 and which was the runner - up in the NCAA Championships, her junior year. She was co-captain of the 2011-2012 team. [13]

National competitions

English came in ninth in the 2004 Olympic Trials in the 100 Backstroke at the age of 15. In 2005 she gained a Silver at the U.S. Open. In 2006 she won a Bronze at the Spring Championships and got a Silver in the 100 Backstroke at the Summer Nationals. She broke the US Open Record for the 50 Backstroke in 2007 at the Toyota Grand Prix at the University of Missouri, winning a Gold in the event. [1] As of 2016, she still held the YMCA long course 50 backstroke record she set in 2004. [14] In National competitions she swam for the Cougar Aquatic Club in Montclair, New Jersey under Coach Kit Ashenfelter.

International competitions

She won a Silver in the 100 backstroke, a bronze in the 200 backstroke, and a Bronze in the 400 Medley Relay at the 2005 Junior Pan Pacific Meet. She was a member of USA's Pan Pacific team and was a finalist in the 100 backstroke at the 2006 Pan Pacific Meet. At the World University Games in 2007 she helped the United States team to a Silver in the 400 Medley Relay (pr) and was a finalist in the 50 Back. [1]

Post retirement

She went on to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States as a neurology nurse at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. [15] She is now a Director of Patient Care at the hospital.

Peter Jeffrey Marshall is an American competition swimmer who specializes in the backstroke. He is a former world record holder in the 50-meter backstroke and the 100-meter backstroke.

Beth Anne Botsford is an American former competition swimmer and backstroke specialist who won two gold medals as a fifteen-year-old at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. She did so in the individual 100-meter backstroke, and as a member of the women's relay team in 4×100-meter medley.

Catherine Mai-Lan Fox, born December 15, 1977 in Detroit, Michigan, is an American former swimmer who competed for Stanford University, and won two gold medals swimming freestyle at the 1996 Summer Olympics, one in the 4x100 freestyle relay and one in the 4x100 medley relay.

The Auburn Tigers swimming and diving program is Auburn University's representative in the sport of swimming and diving. The Tigers compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 and are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The program started in 1932 when the pool was in the basement of the gymnasium. The program had to telegraph their timed results to other schools and compare as the pool was too small for competitions.

Hannah Margaret McNair "Maggie" Mac Neil is a Canadian competitive swimmer. A 100 metre butterfly event specialist, she is the 2020 Olympic champion, 2019 World (LC) champion, two-time World (SC) champion, 2022 Commonwealth champion, and 2023 Pan American champion. She holds the current Americas record (55.59s), the short course world record, the Commonwealth record, and Pan American record in the event.

Amy Bilquist is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the backstroke and freestyle events. She represented LA Current in the 2019 season of the International Swimming League and will represent DC Trident in the 2020 season.

Rhyan Elizabeth White is an American swimmer. She won a silver medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics for her contribution in the prelims of the event and placed fourth in both the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter backstroke. At the 2020 Olympics, White also became the first Utah-born swimmer to compete in an Olympic Games. At the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, she was the only swimmer representing the United States to win a medal. She won her first world title in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2021 World Short Course Championships.

Gianluca Urlando is an American competitive swimmer. He is the American record holder in the men's 100 yard backstroke and a world junior record holder in the men's 4×200 meter freestyle relay and the 4×100 meter mixed freestyle relay. As a sophomore in the NCAA for the Georgia Bulldogs at the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, he became the first person to swim the 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard butterfly each in less than 44 seconds. At the 2019 World Junior Championships, he won gold medals in the 200 meter freestyle, 200 meter butterfly, 4×100 meter freestyle relay, 4×200 meter freestyle relay, and 4×100 meter mixed freestyle relay.

Kelly Hecking is an American former backstroke and freestyle competition swimmer. She is the most successful Notre Dame Fighting Irish athlete in any sport at the Big East Conference Championships with 19 event conference championships and four team conference championships. Hecking set the Big East record for most career swimming conference championships. She was the only Notre Dame swimmer to win an individual event four times (1999–2002) at the Big East Championship. Hecking was an eight-time NCAA All-American honorable mention. She was a two-time high school All-American and two-time New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) 100 yard backstroke champion. She is also a 3-time YMCA Nationals backstroke champion and 9-time YMCA Nationals backstroke medalist.

Teagan O'Dell is an American competitive swimmer. She is a 200 m backstroke Champion in 2023 World Junior Championships, also win gold medalist in 4×100 m mixed medley with silver medalist in 4×100 m freestyle. At the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, she placed fourth in the 200 meter individual medley, won the b-final of the 200 meter backstroke, and placed second in the b-final of the 100 meter backstroke.
