Although Ronald Reagan, the Republican presidential nominee, won the state in a landslide that year, Schwinden comfortably defeated Ramirez to win his first of two terms as governor.

The 2022 United States House of Representatives elections in Montana were held on November 8, 2022, to elect two U.S. Representatives from Montana, one from each of its congressional districts. Prior to this election cycle, Montana had one at-large district, represented by Republican Matt Rosendale. However, during the 2020 redistricting cycle, Montana regained the 2nd district that it lost in 1993. As a result, Montana became the first state relegated from multi-district to at-large status that reclaimed a 2nd representative in the House of Representatives, in which Rosendale ran for re-election.

Incumbent Republican Treasurer Kimberly Yee initially ran for governor, but suspended her campaign on January 15, 2022, and ran for re-election as the Republican nominee, defeating the Democratic nominee, State Senator Martín Quezada, by a margin of 11.4%. Yee's margin of victory was the largest margin of victory in a contested statewide election in Arizona in 2022, and her large margin was considered one of the few highlights for the Arizona GOP in an otherwise lackluster cycle.
