Leioa (Spanish : Lejona) is a municipality in Biscay, Basque Country, in northern Spain. It is located south of Getxo and Berango delimitating east and south with Erandio, Portugalete and Sestao. Today it is part of the Bilbao conurbation. Its population in 2019 was 31,795. Leioa has an area of 8.36 square kilometres (3.23 sq mi). The Udondo river constitutes the eastern limit of the municipality. [2]

History

Leioa has its origins in 1526, before which it was part of the "anteiglesia de Erandio". [3] It was a village with no more than 8000 people until the 1960s, when development came its way, as Bilbao expanded. Its population experienced a rapid increase in the 1970s, and a more moderate growth afterwards. It has become a part of metropolitan Bilbao.

The municipality of Leioa still retains much of its agricultural past and out of the urban centre many traditional Basque houses can still be seen on little family farms, though rapid development puts their long-term future in question. The University of the Basque Country (EHU-UPVEuskal Herriko Unibertsitatea - Universidad del Pais Vasco) has most faculties within this municipality.

Euskotren Tranbia, formerly known as Euskotran is an Urban transit tramway system that operates lines in the cities of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao, plus one under construction in Leioa and another one, in the city of Barakaldo, all of them in the Basque Country. It began operations for the first time in Bilbao in 2002 and in Vitoria in 2008. It is one of the four commercial brands under which Basque Railways operates, as a public company managed by the Basque Government. Sopela Municipality in Basque Country, Spain

Sopela, also known as Sopelana, is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of Basque Country, northern Spain. The town is roughly 820 hectares in area, located in the comarca Mungialdea on the north east side of Bilbao and due east of the Nervión river estuary. In the municipality, other former towns like Larrabasterra are now merged to make Sopela larger. The population is 13,878 people, as recorded in the 2019 census. The area of Sopela is situated among green hills and beaches. This makes it a very attractive suburb of Bilbao, with a short commute of 35 minutes on the metro.

University of the Basque Country

The University of the Basque Country is a Spanish public university of the Basque Autonomous Community. Heir of the University of Bilbao, initially it was made up of the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences of Sarriko (1955), Medicine (1968) and Sciences (1968). Following the General Law of Education (1970), the Nautical School (1784), the School of Business Studies of Bilbao (1818) and the Technical Schools of Engineers (1897) joined in, until it grew into the complex of thirty centers that compose it presently.

Greater Bilbao is an administrative division of the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country, Spain. It is one of the seven comarcas of Biscay and the most populated one. The capital city of Greater Bilbao is Bilbao.

The Estuary of Bilbao lies at the common mouth of the rivers Nervion, Ibaizabal and Cadagua, that drain most of Biscay and part of Alava in the Basque Country, Spain. In this instance, the Spanish word estuario is used to describe what in English would normally be called part estuary, part tidal river. The estuary becomes a tidal river which extends 16 km (9.9 mi) into the city of Bilbao, starting from the Bilbao Abra bay. It hosts the port of Bilbao throughout its length, although the Port Authority has recently restored most of the upper reaches to Bilbao and other municipalities for their urban regeneration. The port is now being transferred to the seaboard on the coast at Santurtzi and Zierbena.

Deusto District in Basque Country, Spain

Deusto, also known as Deustu in Basque and formerly known as San Pedro de Deusto, is one of the eight districts of Bilbao, (Spain). It is located on the right side of the Bilbao estuary, in the northwestern part of the city and bordering the estuary itself on the south and the southern hillside of Mount Artxanda and Mount Bandera on the north. Deusto was originally an elizate and also a municipality until 1925 when it was completely annexed by Bilbao in order to expand the free land available to the city. Deusto is known as the university district of the city as it is home to the University of Deusto and the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of the Basque Country.

Bilbao-Abando railway station

The Abando Indalecio Prieto railway station also known simply as Bilbao-Abando and previously known as Estación del Norte is a terminal railway station in Bilbao, Basque Country (Spain). The name comes from Abando, the district in which the station is located, and Indalecio Prieto, who was Minister of Public Works during the Second Spanish Republic. The station serves as the terminus station for several long and medium distance services operated by Renfe as well as commuter rail services within the Bilbao metropolitan area operated by Cercanías. The station has direct access to Metro Bilbao and to Bilbao's Tram, as well as many local and regional bus lines. The railway station Bilbao-Concordia, operated by Renfe Feve is located in close proximity. After the construction of the high-speed line Basque Y is finished, Bilbao-Abando will serve as the western terminus, which will involve the creation of a completely new station replacing the current one.

Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo station

Zazpikaleak/Casco Viejo is a railway station in Bilbao, Basque Country (Spain). It is located in the historical neighbourhood of Casco Viejo, in the district of Ibaiondo. It connects the rapid transit network of Metro Bilbao with the commuter rail services of Euskotren Trena. It is the main hub of railway connection between the metropolitan underground network and the railway services to Eibar, Gernika, Bermeo and San Sebastián as well as the Txorierri valley. In its current form, the station opened on 8 April 2017.

Lutxana (Metro Bilbao)

Lutxana is a station of line 1 of Metro Bilbao, also served by the Lutxana-Sondika shuttle operated by Euskotren Trena. It is located in the neighbourhood of Lutxana-Enekuri, in the municipality of Erandio. In its current inception, the station was opened on 11 November 1995. The shuttle services started in 2015.

Erandio is a station of line 1 of Metro Bilbao. It is located in the neighbourhood of Altzaga, in the municipality of Erandio. It was opened on 11 November 1995.

Leioa (Metro Bilbao)

Leioa is a station of line 1 of Metro Bilbao. It is located in the neighbourhood of Udondo, in the municipality of Leioa. It was opened on 11 November, 1995, replacing a much older one-platform station named Udondo, part of the Bilbao-Las Arenas railway. It is located next to a park and ride facility.

Lamiako (Metro Bilbao)

Lamiako is a station of line 1 of Metro Bilbao. It is located in the neighbourhood of Lamiako, in the municipality of Leioa. It was opened on 11 November, 1995, replacing a much older station, originally named Lamiaco, which was part of the Bilbao-Las Arenas railway and opened in 1887. Starting in the decade of 1980, the railway line was operated by the Basque Railways until its integration into the Metro Bilbao network, when the former station was demolished and replaced by the current building.

Bilbao metropolitan area

The Bilbao Metropolitan Area is the metropolitan area or continuous urban area based around the city of Bilbao, in the Basque Country, Spain. It comprises the city of Bilbao, the 25 municipalities that make the comarca of Greater Bilbao plus ten other surrounding municipalities, all of them in the province of Biscay.
