The Liberal Vannin Party (LVP; Manx : Partee Libraalagh Vannin) is a political party in the Isle of Man. It was founded in 2006 by Peter Karran, then an Independent MHK for Onchan. Karran had been, until 2004, a member of the Manx Labour Party. The "Vannin" in the party name is a form of the name of the Isle of Man in the native Manx Gaelic language, while "Liberal" is a reference to the general political position of the party. The party is currently led by Lawrie Hooper MHK.

The Liberal Vannin Party put forward several candidates at the 2006 general election and had two MHKs elected. In the 2011 general election, they returned three MHKs. This result was mirrored in the 2016 general election, but one of these subsequently resigned from the party, and one died in 2020. The party had 4 candidates in the 2021 Manx general election, of whom one (Hooper) was elected. As of 2021, they are one of only two parties in the House of Keys; the remaining 21 out of the 24 members are independents. The party do not currently hold any seats on the Douglas Borough Council.

The party campaigns on a platform of greater accountability and transparency in government [5] and also strives for further devolution from the United Kingdom to the Isle of Man. [2] [3]

History

The Liberal Vannin Party was founded in 2006 by Peter Karran, a former member of the Manx Labour Party. Karran was joined by Tony Wright who was already intending to contest Rushen as an independent. It was announced that their target seats would be Douglas South, Middle and Onchan. [5]

The party stood nine candidates in the 2006 Manx general election, and two of them were elected: Peter Karran in Onchan and Bill Malarkey in Douglas South. Karran received more votes than any other candidate in the election. After being elected representing the Liberal Vannin Party, Malarkey resigned from the party and sat as an independent. The Liberal Vannin Party sent delegates to the Liberal International's 2007 Hamburg Conference, where they became Observer Members pending verification at the 2008 Belfast Conference. [6] Since the 2008 Belfast Conference, Liberal Vannin has been an official Observer Member of Liberal International. [7] The Liberal Vannin Party is also listed as a "Sister Party" of the British Liberal Democrats. [8]

At the 2011 Manx general election, the Liberal Vannin Party stood ten candidates, received 20.9% of the vote and had three Members of the House of Keys elected. [9] These were Peter Karran and Zac Hall in Onchan, and Kate Beecroft in Douglas South. Beecroft, standing as the official Liberal Vannin candidate, defeated Bill Malarkey who had previously been a member of the party but was contesting the seat as an independent.

From 2011 to 2012, Karran served in the Isle of Man Government as the Minister for Education and Children. [10] In May 2012 Zac Hall had his membership revoked for "bringing the party into disrepute", leaving them with only two MHKs. [11] In 2014 Kate Beecroft (subsequently known as Kate Costain) was elected Leader of the Liberal Vannin Party, with Karran saying it "was time for a change". [12] [13] [14]

In 2020, Costain resigned and Lawrie Hooper MHK was elected as her replacement. [15] He is now the only LibVan MHK.

Adrian John Earnshaw MHK is a Manx politician, who was the Minister of Home Affairs in the Isle of Man Government and a Member of the House of Keys for Onchan.

William Mackay Malarkey was a Manx politician, who was elected Liberal Vannin MHK for Douglas South but later defected from the party and sat as an independent. In the 2011 general election he lost his seat to Liberal Vannin candidate Kate Beecroft. He was re-elected at a by-election in May 2015 as an independent candidate, and retained his seat for Douglas South in September 2016.

Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority

The Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority was the statutory board responsible for water supply and sewage disposal in the Isle of Man. It was formed in 1972 as the 'Isle of Man Water Authority' by the merger of the Isle of Man Water Board and the Water Department of Douglas Corporation. In 1974 it took over the gas production and distribution functions of the Isle of Man Gas Authority, and was renamed the 'Isle of Man Water and Gas Authority'. In 1985 the gas undertaking was privatised, and the authority reverted to its original title. It was renamed the 'Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority' in 2010, taking over the sewerage responsibilities of the former Department of Transport.

Culture Vannin

Culture Vannin is the trading name for the Manx Heritage Foundation, established in 1982 by the Isle of Man Government to promote Manx culture, heritage and language. It was rebranded in February 2014, having previously been known as the "Manx Heritage Foundation", since the former title "held connotations more towards the cultural history of the island" which were not felt to be accurate to the organisation's progressive approach to invigorating Manx culture. Culture Vannin's motto is "Taking our culture forward".

Kathleen Joan "Kate" Costain is a Manx politician who is a former Leader of the Liberal Vannin Party and was a Member of the House of Keys for Douglas South from 2011 to 2020. She changed her surname from Beecroft to Costain in 2019.

Zac Hall

Zac Hall MHK is a former Member of the House of Keys for Onchan in the Isle of Man and was a Minister for Department of Food and Agriculture. Elected a member of Liberal Vannin in 2011, he had his party membership revoked in 2012 for "bringing the party into disrepute".

Isle of Man Green Party Political party on the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man Green Party is a green political party in the Isle of Man founded in August 2016 by Andrew Langan-Newton, who still leads the party along with Deputy Leader, Lamara Craine. Success has been achieved at local authority level with the first seat won in a by-election in 2018 and today the party has 5 elected members on 4 different local authorities. The Party proposes that it provides a forum for citizens of the Isle of Man to build a movement seeking change and direction in Isle of Man politics.

2021 Manx general election

A general election was held in the Isle of Man on 23 September 2021. A record ten women were elected, twice as many as the five elected at the previous election. For the first time, in each of two constituencies, both elected MHKs were women. Four government ministers failed to be re-elected.

Lawrie Lee Hooper is a Welsh-born Manx politician who is the leader of Liberal Vannin Party. He represented Ramsey in the House of Keys from 2016.

Julie Marie Edge is a Manx politician from the Liberal Vannin Party. She represented Onchan in the House of Keys from 2016 and was re-elected in 2021 with an increased vote share.
