Limak Holding A.S. is a Turkish conglomerate, with major interests in construction, energy, cement, and tourism. Its assets include the Limak Cement and Limak Energy companies and the Limak Tourism Group. [2] In 2012, it had around $260m revenue from construction. [3]

Limak was launched in 1976 by Sezai Bacaksız and Nihat Özdemir, with Özdemir focussing on cement and energy while Bacaksız focussed on airports and tourism. [4]

Recent history

In May 2013 Limak Holding was part of a joint venture which won the EUR22bn contract to construct a third international airport in Istanbul. [5] The group had previously been part of a joint venture which in 2007 won a 20-year concession to operate Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, [6] and in 2007, together with French firm Aéroport de Lyon, won the concession tender for Pristina International Airport Adem Jashari. [7]

In July 2013, it was part of a joint venture which acquired the daily newspaper Akşam , together with TV channel Sky Turk 360 and radio station Alem FM, for TL60m. [8]

In December 2013 Nihat Özdemir was among the 41 suspects who were issued arrest orders in the second corruption probe. «Prosecutors also appear to be targeting construction companies involved in some of the government’s showpiece infrastructure projects. Those named in media reports included Nihat Ozdemir, head of Limak Group, part of a consortium that won the €22 billion tender to build Istanbul’s third airport». [9] In 2011 Özdemir and Bacaksız were listed as billionaires by Forbes . [10]

It is part owner with IC Holding of two coal-fired power stations in Turkey, Kemeköy power station and Yeniköy power station. [11] [12]

Within the scope of the 'Our Love, Our Energy is with You' project, which was started in 2021, the company provided food and water aid to stray animals that had difficulty in finding food due to the cold weather in the winter months. [13]

The Democratic Society Party was a Kurdish nationalist political party in Turkey. The party considered itself social-democratic and had observer status in the Socialist International. It was considered to be the successor of the Democratic People's Party (DEHAP). The party was established in 2005 and succeeded in getting elected more than ninety mayors in the municipal elections of 2009. On 11 December 2009, the Constitutional Court of Turkey banned the DTP, ruling that the party has become "focal point of activities against the indivisible unity of the state, the country and the nation". The ban has been widely criticized both by groups within Turkey and by several international organizations. The party was succeeded by the Peace and Democracy Party.

Radikal was a daily liberal Turkish language newspaper, published in Istanbul. From 1996 it was published by Aydın Doğan's Doğan Media Group. Although Radikal did not endorse a particular political alignment, it was generally considered by the public as a social liberal newspaper. Despite only having a circulation of around 25,000, it was considered one of the most influential Turkish newspapers.

Çalık Holding is a Turkish company that has been operating in the energy, construction, mining, textile, finance, and telecom sectors since the 1980s. Founder and chairman Ahmet Çalık began his business career in the textile industry, founding Orta Doğu Tekstil in 1981 and Çalık Denim in 1987. During the early-1990s independence of CIS countries, he made his first foreign investments and founded Gap Pazarlama and Gap İnşaat. These companies were brought together as Çalık Holding in 1997. The umbrella company founded Çalık Enerji in 1998 and Aktif Bank in 1999, to enter the energy and finance sectors.

Vestel is a Turkish home and professional appliances manufacturing company consisting of 18 companies specialised in electronics, major appliances and information technology. Vestel's headquarters and production plant are located in Manisa, while the company's parent conglomerate is the Istanbul based Zorlu Holding.

Anadolubank A.Ş. is a Turkish bank bought in 1997 by HABAŞ Grubu from the Prime Ministry Privatization Administration of Turkey Anadolubank currently maintains 106 branches throughout Turkey and has a personnel of total 1,750 employees.

ICBC Turkey Bank A.Ş., previously known as Tekstilbank A.Ş. was founded in 1986. In 2014, GSD Holding A.Ş sold their 75.5% stock to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. The acquisition completed in April 2015. In November 2015, the name of the bank changed to "ICBC Turkey". In July 2018, ICBC provided a $3.6-billion loan package for the Turkish energy and transportation sector.

Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is one of two international airports serving Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey. Located 32 km (20 mi) southeast of the city center, Sabiha Gökçen Airport is in the Asian part of the bi-continental city and serves as the hub for AnadoluJet and Pegasus Airlines. The facility is named after Sabiha Gökçen, adoptive daughter of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the first female fighter pilot in the world. Ordu Yardımlaşma Kurumu (OYAK), is a Turkish charity and pension fund with around 363,000 members and owner of Renault (Oyak). The OYAK Holding Investment Subsidiary Group is one of the largest industrial groups in Turkey. The group was the former owner of ING Oyak Bank and the Oypa supermarket chain. In 2012, it was rated BB+/stable by Standard & Poor's. The group co-owns Oyak-Renault, a car manufacturer, and steel producer Erdemir. OYAK Group of Companies added Sagra to its structure in April 2021.

The 2013 corruption scandal in Turkey or 17-25 December Corruption and Bribery Operation was a criminal investigation that involved several key people in the Turkish government. All of the 52 people detained on 17 December were connected in various ways with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). Prosecutors accused 14 people – including Suleyman Aslan, the director of state-owned Halkbank, Iranian businessman Reza Zarrab, and several family members of cabinet ministers – of bribery, corruption, fraud, money laundering and gold smuggling.

Nihat Zeybekci is a Turkish economist, politician, a member of parliament for Denizli Province of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and former Minister of the Economy.

The DHKP/C insurgency in Turkey refers to the Marxist–Leninist insurgency waged by the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) against the Republic of Turkey, ongoing since 1990. The insurgency began with political assassinations in the early 1990s, and has escalated in the past few years with the use of suicide bombers.

The 2020 Turkish Super Cup was the 47th edition of the Turkish Super Cup since its establishment as Presidential Cup in 1966, the annual Turkish football match contested by the winners of the previous season's top league and cup competitions. It was played on 27 January 2021 between the champions of the 2019–20 Süper Lig, İstanbul Başakşehir, and the winners of the 2019–20 Turkish Cup, Trabzonspor. The venue initially selected was Doha, the capital of Qatar. However, the Turkish Football Federation later announced the venue would be changed to the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.
