The Scotties Tournament of Hearts is the annual Canadian women's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada, formerly called the Canadian Curling Association. The winner goes on to represent Canada at the women's world curling championships. Since 1985, the winner also gets to return to the following year's tournament as "Team Canada". It is formally known as the "Canadian Women's Curling Championship".

One main reason for an Olympic qualifying event apart from the national championships is that provincial residency rules do not apply to the Olympic team. Curling was added to the Olympic programme in 1998, and a Canadian Olympic Trials have been held the year prior since 1997.

Christine "Chris" Jurgenson is a Canadian curler from British Columbia. She is a former World Champion, and was lead for the championship team at the World Senior Curling Championship in 2009 and skip for the 2011 World Senior Curling Championships. Jurgenson grew up in Ontario, where she played with her sister, Marilyn Bodogh. She won her first provincial title in 1980. She skipped Ontario to a 7–5 record at the 1980 Canadian Ladies Curling Association Championship.

Canada has dominated both the men's and women's championships since their inception, although Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Scotland, the United States, Norway and China have all won at least one championship.
