In cricket, a captain is a player who leads the team and has additional roles and responsibilities. [1] [2] The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional league for Twenty20 cricket in India, [3] which has been held annually since its first edition in 2008. [4] In the 17 seasons played, 70 players have captained their team in at least one match. [5]

Mumbai Indians' Rohit Sharma has won 6 titles as a player and 5 as a captain making him the joint most successful player (along with Ambati Rayudu) and joint most successful captain in IPL history along with Chennai Super Kings's MS Dhoni. [5] With the highest win–loss percentage among successful captains who have captained over 44 matches, MS Dhoni is the captain and player who has played most number of finals and qualified for most times in the playoffs. He has played 226 matches and won the most number of matches as a captain with 133, and has also lost the most matches playing as a captain with 91, [6] [5] where as Rohit Sharma has a second place with 5 titles. Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, and Steven Smith are the only players to captain three teams: Jayawardene has captained Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab and Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Sangakkara has captained Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Smith has captained Pune Warriors India, Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiants. James Hopes of the Daredevils has captained the most matches without registering a win; he led his team in three matches, two of which were lost and one ended with no result.

Only two trophy winning captains Iyer and pandya are there who is still captaining a side.

[5] At present, Shreyas Iyer is the only player who is captaining a team and having a trophy with the same side (Kolkata Knight Riders).

Shreyas Iyer is the only captain in the IPL history who took two different sides in the final of the different editions of the IPL. At first he took Delhi Capitals in the final of IPL 2020 where the team lost to Mumbai Indians and In second time he took Kolkata Knight Riders in the final of IPL 2024 where the team won the trophy in the one sided chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Deccan Chargers is a defunct IPL franchise which was based in the city of Hyderabad. The franchise was one of the eight inaugural members of the IPL in 2008 and winner of 2009. It was owned by Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd. After finishing at the bottom of the points table in the first season, they won the second season held in South Africa in 2009 under the captaincy of former Australian wicket-keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist. Gilchrist was the captain of the team for the first three seasons of the IPL with Rohit Sharma as his deputy. Rising Pune Supergiant was a franchise cricket team based in Pune, Maharashtra, that played in the Indian Premier League in 2016 and as a finalist in 2017. It was the second team representing Pune after Pune Warriors India. The team, along with Gujarat Lions, featured as two-season replacements for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who were suspended due to their involvement in illegal betting by their respective owners.

Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) was a franchise cricket team based in Pune, Maharashtra, India, which played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2016 and 2017. It was one of eight teams which competed in the 2017 Indian Premier League. The team was captained for the season by Steve Smith and coached by Stephen Fleming. They lost the final to Mumbai Indians by 1 run in what was to be the team's last match.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are a franchise cricket team based in Hyderabad, India, which plays in Indian Premier League(IPL). Sunrisers Hyderabad made their IPL debut replacing Deccan Chargers in 2013 Indian Premier League. Kumar Sangakkara was initially appointed as the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad but was replaced by Cameron White after nine matches as the latter captained the team for the remaining 7 matches and the Eliminator match in the Playoffs. The team was coached by Tom Moody with Waqar Younis as their bowling coach while V. V. S. Laxman and Kris Srikkanth were appointed as the mentors. The team played all their home games at home in Hyderabad.
