List of Jews in sports (non-players)

The topic of Jewish participation in sports is discussed extensively in academic and popular literature. Scholars believe that sports have been a historical avenue for Jewish people to overcome obstacles toward their participation in secular society, especially before the mid-20th century in Europe and the United States. [1]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lou Boudreau</span> American baseball player and manager (1917–2001)

Louis Boudreau, nicknamed "Old Shufflefoot", "Handsome Lou", and "the Good Kid", was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 15 seasons, primarily as a shortstop on the Cleveland Indians, and managed four teams for 15 seasons including 10 seasons as a player-manager. He was also a radio announcer for the Chicago Cubs and in college was a dual-sport athlete in baseball and basketball, earning All-American honors in basketball for the University of Illinois.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ron Blomberg</span> American baseball player

Ronald Mark Blomberg, nicknamed "Boomer", is an American former professional baseball player and minor league manager. He played in Major League Baseball as a designated hitter, first baseman, and right fielder. He played for the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox (1978), and was the manager of the Bet Shemesh Blue Sox in the Israel Baseball League (2007). He was the first designated hitter in Major League Baseball history. He batted left-handed, and threw right-handed.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Brad Ausmus</span> American baseball player and manager (born 1969)

Bradley David Ausmus is an American professional baseball player, coach, and manager. He is the bench coach for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). In his 18-year MLB playing career, Ausmus played as a catcher for the San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He also managed the Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, and Israeli national baseball team.

The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame was opened July 7, 1981, in Netanya, Israel. It honors Jewish athletes and their accomplishments from anywhere around the world.

Michael Peter Epstein, nicknamed "Super Jew", is an American former professional baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators / Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, and California Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ilana Kloss</span> South African tennis player, coach, and commissioner

Ilana Sheryl Kloss is a former professional tennis player, tennis coach, and commissioner of World TeamTennis from 2001–21. She was the World's No. 1 ranked doubles player in 1976, and World No. 19 in singles in 1979. She won the Wimbledon juniors singles title in 1972, the US Open juniors singles title in 1974, and the US Open Doubles and French Open Mixed Doubles titles in 1976. She won three gold medals at the 1973 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Stephen Allan Hertz is a former Major League Baseball player. He was also manager of the Tel Aviv Lightning in the Israel Baseball League. He attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and is Jewish.

Sport in Israel plays an important role in Israeli culture and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sport. The most popular sports in Israel have traditionally been Association football (mainly) and basketball (secondly) – with the first being considered the national sport – in both of which Israeli professional teams have been competitive internationally. Israel is an international center for Jewish sport around the world and since 1932 the Maccabiah Games, an Olympic-style event for Jewish athletes, is held in the country. Despite Israel's location in the Asian continent, the Israeli sports associations in various sports belong to the European associations due to the refusal of many Arab Asian countries to compete with Israeli athletes.

Edward Kenneth Newman is an American former professional football player who was an offensive guard for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL) from 1973 to 1984. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, he played 167 games over 12 seasons with the Dolphins. He is now a judge in Florida, and he has recently published his memoir, Warrior Judge: One Man's Journey from Gridiron to Gavel.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sam Balter</span> American basketball player and sportscaster

Samuel Balter Jr. was an American basketball player who won a gold medal at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was also a renowned sportscaster.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Brian Kowitz</span> American baseball player (born 1969)

Brian Mark Kowitz is an American former professional baseball player for the Atlanta Braves in 1995. He spent most of his career in the minor leagues.

Jewish Sports Review (JSR) was a bi-monthly magazine that operated from 1997 to 2022. Its editors were Ephraim Moxson and Shel Wallman.

Leonard Howard Levy was an American professional baseball player, coach and scout. He coached in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates for seven seasons (1957–1963).

Irving "Moon" Mondschein was an American track and field athlete and football player.

Walter Miller (1890–1959) was an American jockey. In 1906, he won 388 races, becoming the first jockey to win more than 300 races in a single year, a record not broken until 1952. He was inducted into the U.S. Racing Racing Hall of Fame, the Jockey Hall of Fame, and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jerry Weinstein</span> American professional baseball manager (born 1943)

Jerry Weinstein is an American professional baseball manager. He most recently managed the 2017 Hartford Yard Goats, a Minor League Baseball (MiLB) Double-A team in the Eastern League, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

The Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, in Beverly Hills, California, is a hall of fame dedicated to honoring American Jewish athletes, other sports personalities, and teams from Southern California who have distinguished themselves in sports.
