The Memphis Grizzlies are an American professional basketball team based in Memphis, Tennessee. The Grizzlies play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1995 along with the Toronto Raptors as part of the NBA's expansion into Canada. The Grizzlies and the Raptors became the first non-United States teams to join the NBA since 1946. [1] After spending six seasons in Vancouver, the Grizzlies relocated to Memphis in the 2001–02 season. [2] The Grizzlies have played their home games at the FedExForum since 2004. [3] The Grizzlies were owned by Michael Heisley and several locals including J. R. Hyde, Andy Cates, and Elliot Perry. [4]
There have been 11 head coaches for the Grizzlies franchise. The franchise's first head coach was Brian Winters, who coached for two seasons. [5] Lionel Hollins is the franchise's all-time leader in regular-season games coached (415), and the franchise's all-time leader in regular-season game wins (214). [6] Hubie Brown is the only Grizzlies head coach to have won the NBA Coach of the Year Award. [7] Brown was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor, [a] in 2005. [8] Tony Barone and Marc Iavaroni have spent their entire NBA head coaching careers with the Grizzlies. [9] [10] [11] Iavaroni was fired by the Grizzlies on January 22, 2009. Hollins was named as Iavaroni's successor, though Johnny Davis was the head coach for two games before Hollins' third term with the team. [12] On May 7, 2016, Dave Joerger was fired by the Grizzlies. [13] On May 29, 2016, David Fizdale was hired by the Grizzlies. [14] Fizdale was fired on November 27, 2017.

Lionel Eugene Hollins is an American professional basketball coach and former player who most recently served as an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A point guard, Hollins played for the Portland Trail Blazers, winning an NBA championship in 1977 and named an NBA All-Star in 1978. The Trail Blazers retired his No. 14.
Ryan Kenwood Hollins is an American former professional basketball player who is a color commentator for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins. He was a 7-foot (2.1 m) center who was a journeyman in the NBA, playing for nine teams in 10 seasons. He played briefly in Europe before ending his career.

The 2004–05 NBA season was the Grizzlies' tenth season in the National Basketball Association, and their fourth season in Memphis, Tennessee. Coming off their first playoff appearance in franchise history, the Grizzlies had a new look and moved into their new arena, the FedExForum. However, the team struggled with a 5–7 start as 71-year-old Hubie Brown retired from coaching due to "unexpected health problems". The Grizzlies would lose their next four games under Lionel Hollins before replacing him with TNT analyst Mike Fratello. Under Fratello, the Grizzlies would win 12 of their 15 games in January climbing back into playoff contention. Despite losing five of their last six games, the Grizzlies finished fourth in the Southwest Division with a 45–37 record, making their second consecutive trip to the playoffs.

David Sean Fizdale is an American professional basketball coach who is an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He previously was an associate general manager for the Utah Jazz, an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, the head coach for the New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies, and was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors and the Miami Heat. He won two championships with the Heat in 2012 and 2013.
David Joerger ( [YAY-ger]) is an American professional basketball coach who currently serves as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks. He was the head coach of the Dakota Wizards from 2000 to 2004 and in 2006–2007 in the International Basketball Association, Continental Basketball Association, and the NBA Development League, winning championships in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2007. He also coached the Sioux Falls Skyforce from 2004 to 2006, winning a championship in 2005. In the NBA, Joerger served as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2013 to 2016, and Sacramento Kings from 2016 to 2019.

The 2017–18 Memphis Grizzlies season was the 23rd season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During this season, the Grizzlies announced that both Zach Randolph and Tony Allen would have their numbers be retired for the franchise at some point in the future, both of whom would be the first for this franchise's history. On November 27, 2017, head coach David Fizdale was fired after an eight-game losing streak and a publicized benching of Marc Gasol. Associate head coach J. B. Bickerstaff was promoted as an interim head coach.
