Ulvi Cemal Erkin was a member of the pioneer group of symphonic composers in Turkey, born in the period 1904–1910, who later came to be called The Turkish Five. These composers set out the direction of music in the newly established Turkish Republic. These composers distinguished themselves with their use of Turkish folk music and modal elements in an entirely Western symphonic style.

The Turkish Five is a name used by some authors to identify five pioneers of Western classical music in Turkey. They were all born in the first decade of the 20th century, within about three-and-a-half years of each other, and composed their best music in the early years of the Republic of Turkey, especially during the presidencies of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and İsmet İnönü. They all shared contacts with the two presidents and were highly encouraged as such, both on a personal level and also through the general drive towards westernization in Turkey.

He composed symphonies, written works for chamber ensembles (instrumental), choral creations, theater and film music, etc.

Mesut İktu is a Turkish operatic baritone, administrator and voice teacher. He was manager and artistic director of the Turkish State Opera and Ballet 1987-1991 and again 2001-2003.

Van Gogh is an opera in one act and five scenes by Nevit Kodallı to a Turkish-language libretto by playwright Orhan Asena based on Irving Stone's Lust for Life about the painter Vincent van Gogh. The work was premiered at the Ankara State Opera as part of the first Ankara Music Festival that was planned by local arts organizations. The original production was directed by tenor Aydın Gün who also portrayed the title role. Other artists in the world premiere included soprano Sevda Aydan as Maya and bass Ayhan Baran as Paul Gauguin among others.

Arturs Maskats is a Latvian composer and since 1996 artistic director of the Latvian National Opera. His orchestral composition, Tango, received international exposure as one of the finalist works of the third Masterprize International Composing Competition in 2003. It was also played at the 2022 Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn by the Vienna Philharmonic under Andris Nelsons in Vienna, Austria.
