Breweries in Indiana produce a wide range of beers in different styles that are marketed locally, regionally, and nationally. Brewing companies vary widely in the volume and variety of beer produced, from small nanobreweries and microbreweries to massive multinational conglomerate macrobreweries.
In 2012, Indiana's 68 breweries and brewpubs employed 260 people directly, and more than 23,000 others in related jobs such as wholesaling and retailing. [1] [2] Including people directly employed in brewing, as well as those who supply Indiana's breweries with everything from ingredients to machinery, the total business and personal tax revenue generated by Indiana's breweries and related industries was more than $456 million. [2] Consumer purchases of Indiana's brewery products generated almost $192 million extra in tax revenue. [3] In 2012, according to the Brewers Association, Indiana ranked 22nd in the number of craft breweries per capita, with 54. [4]
For context, at the end of 2013 there were 2,822 breweries in the United States, including 2,768 craft breweries subdivided into 1,237 brewpubs, 1,412 microbreweries and 119 regional craft breweries. [5] In that same year, according to the Beer Institute, the brewing industry employed around 2 million Americans in the brewing industry (brewing, distribution and retail) and had a combined economic impact of more than $246 billion. Craft beer is a beer that has been made by craft breweries. They produce smaller amounts of beer, typically less than large breweries, and are often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as having an emphasis on enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.
The U.S. state of Oregon is home to more than 200 breweries and brew pubs that produce a large variety of beer.
Three Floyds Brewing is a brewery founded in 1996 by brothers Nick and Simon and their father Mike Floyd in Hammond, Indiana. Since 2000, the brewery has been located in Munster, Indiana. Three Floyds opened a brewpub adjacent to the brewery in 2005. They closed the brewpub in 2020.
Slow Boat Brewery is a microbrewery located in Chaoyang District, Beijing. Since 2016, the company has operated a brewpub in Sanlitun. In December 2018, Slow Boat Brewery announced plans to open a second location at Dengshikou in Beijing. It is listed among the three major craft breweries in Beijing, including Jing-A Brewing Co., and Great Leap Brewing.
The Keweenaw Brewing Company (KBC) is a craft brewer with a taproom in Houghton and a production facility in nearby South Range, Michigan. It is named for the Keweenaw Peninsula, which projects out to the north of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
