Anna Alexandrovna Timofeyeva-Yegorova was a pilot in the Soviet Air Force during the Second World War. She flew a total of 277 sorties that included liaison, reconnaissance and ground-attack missions before she became a prisoner-of-war when her Il-2 was shot down. She was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1965.

Women in the Russian and Soviet military have played many roles in their country's military history. Women of Russia and the Soviet Union played an important role in World Wars, especially during World War II.

Vera Belik

Vera Lukianovna Belik was a flight navigator and lieutenant in the 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment who frequently flew with pilot Tatyana Makarova. They died when their Po-2 was shot down by a German fighter after completing a bombing mission; both were posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 23 February 1945.

Tatyana Baramzina

Tatyana Nikolayevna Baramzina was a Soviet sniper and telephone operator in World War II who was posthumously awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union on 24 March 1945 for her self-sacrifice to defend wounded Red Army soldiers. A volunteer, she chose to be part of a risking early landing operation to block German forces from using a strategic road in Belarus in the early phase of Operation Bagration. After her landing group suffered heavy casualties she had the option of hiding in a rye field to wait for reinforcements, but chose instead to stay behind and defend a dugout of wounded soldiers.

Tatyana Makarova

Tatyana Petrovna Makarova was a flight commander in the 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, one of the three women's aviation regiments founded by Marina Raskova. She and her navigator Vera Belik were posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union after their plane was shot down by the Axis forces over Nazi-occupied Poland.

Olga Sanfirova

Olga Aleksandrovna Sanfirova was a captain and squadron commander in the 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment during World War II. She was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 23 February 1945, making her the first Tatar woman awarded the title.

Nina Raspopova

Nina Maksimovna Raspopova was a pilot and flight commander in the 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment during World War II. Among many close calls with death, she twice survived being shot down in a Po-2 biplane. For her actions in the war she was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 15 May 1946.

Yevdokiya Nosal

Yevdokiya Ivanova Nosal was a junior lieutenant and deputy squadron commander in the 588th Night Bomber Regiment during World War II. She was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 24 May 1943, making her the first woman pilot to be honored with the title during the war.

Yelena Stempkovskaya

Yelena Konstantinovna Stempkovskaya was a radio operator in the 216th Rifle Regiment of the Red Army during World War II who was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 15 May 1946.

Anna Alekseevna Nikandrova was a Komsomol organizer in the 426th Rifle Regiment of Red Army during World War II who was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 24 March 1945.

Tatyana Ignatovna Kostyrina was a sniper in the Red Army during World War II and one of the top women snipers in history. After her death in combat she was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 16 May 1944.

Kseniya Semyonovna Konstantinova was a medic in the Red Army during World War II who was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 4 June 1944.

Nina Gnilitskaya

Nina Timofeevna Gnilitskaya was a soldier and reconnaissance scout in the 465th Separate Motorized Rifle Reconnaissance Company of the 383rd Rifle Division in the 18th Army on the Southern Front during World War II. After fighting to death in a gunfight against German soldiers when they discovered her hiding place she became the only woman reconnaissance scout in the Red Army to be awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union after the Supreme Soviet posthumously awarded her the title on 31 March 1943.

Larisa Ratushnaya was a Soviet partisan and underground resistance fighter. She was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 8 May 1965 twenty years after the end of the war.

Valentina Safronova

Valentina Ivanovna Safronova was a Soviet partisan and intelligence officer who engaged in reconnaissance and sabotage until she was captured and killed by the Gestapo. On 8 May 1965, over twenty years after her death, she was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
