This is a listing of largest video game publishers and developers ranked by reported revenue. Sony Interactive Entertainment is the world's largest video game company, followed by Tencent and Microsoft Gaming. [1] [2]
Among the 50 largest video game companies, thirteen are based in the United States, ten in Japan, six each in South Korea and China, four each in France and Sweden, and one each in Israel, Poland, Ireland, Canada, United Kingdom, Singapore, and Italy, respectively.
Warner Bros. Games, Annapurna Interactive and Valve Corporation are not included in this list. Warner Bros. Games is a subsidiary of a larger company, and Annapurna Interactive and Valve Corporation are private companies, and there is no available data or estimate pertaining to their revenues. Before Microsoft Gaming acquired Activision Blizzard in 2023, they reported a revenue of $8.8 billion, which would make them the 6th biggest publisher on this list. [3]

Games in the genre typically focus on dance or the simulated performance of musical instruments, and require players to press buttons in a sequence dictated on the screen. Many rhythm games include multiplayer modes in which players compete for the highest score or cooperate as a simulated musical ensemble. Video gaming in France is one of the largest markets in Europe. The French government gives special tax breaks to video game companies. In 2014, the French diplomatic service released a report which calculates the profit generated by the French video game industry at €2.7 billion. It states that there are 300 video game companies in France. It estimates the number of jobs directly related to the video game industry at 5,000. It estimates the number of indirect jobs created by the video game industry at 10,000. The report found that in 2013, around 8 out of 10 people had played a video game in the last 12 months. In 2018, the number of players was estimated at 32.8 million. In France video games have equal status as an artform, alongside more traditional formats like painting and theatre. In 2016, the French Minister of State for Digital Affairs, Axelle Lemaire, held talks with various French video game industry figureheads to find solutions to the problem of misogyny in video games. She mooted solutions like removing tax credits for publishers who publish games with misogynistic content, and creating a label which would identify video games with positive representations of women.

Over 10,000 jobs were lost in 2023, and an additional over 10,100 jobs were lost in 2024 from January to May. These layoffs had reverberating effects on both established game development studios and emerging companies, impacting employees, projects, and the overall landscape of the gaming industry. The layoffs caused several video games to be canceled, video game studios to be shut down or divested from their parent company, and thousands of employees to lose their jobs.
