List of medical schools in Canada

This list of medical schools in Canada includes major academic institutions that award the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree, which is required to become a physician or a surgeon in Canada. M.D. granting medical schools are jointly accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and the U.S. Liaison Committee on Medical Education. There are 17 accredited medical schools in Canada. [1]

In 1866, L'École de médecine et de chirurgie de Montréal also became affiliated with Victoria College. No classes were actually given in Cobourg, however the medical diplomas were issued by Victoria College/University because neither medical school was empowered to grant degrees on their own. The Department’s Medical Board of Examiners was established in 1875 to examine students with certificates from medical schools who wished to obtain M.D. degrees. Dr. Uzziel Ogden taught on the Toronto Faculty for many years. The name of the Department was changed when Victoria University was constituted in 1884, and the Department ceased to exist when Victoria University became affiliated with the University of Toronto. The US podiatric medical school curriculum includes lower extremity anatomy, general human anatomy, physiology, general medicine, physical assessment, biochemistry, neurobiology, pathophysiology, genetics and embryology, microbiology, histology, pharmacology, women's health, physical rehabilitation, sports medicine, research, ethics and jurisprudence, biomechanics, general principles of orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, and foot and ankle surgery.

It awards graduate degrees in Medicine (MD), Clinical Psychology (PsyD and PhD), Biomedical Sciences (PhD), Medical Sciences (MS), and Public Health (MPH and DrPH). The university has 360 students in its medical school and, as of 11 February 2019, was authorized to increase the student body at the medical school to 600 which, when fully in place, will make it the largest private medical school in Puerto Rico and one of the largest under the American flag.

Podiatric Medical School is the term used to designate the institutions which educate students and train them to be podiatrists, which diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. In the United States, only schools which are accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) may earn the status of being a Podiatric Medical School. The Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree is commonly abbreviated D.P.M. degree. The D.P.M. degree is a prerequisite for an individual to be accepted into a CPME accredited residency. The preparatory education of most podiatric physicians — similar to the paths of traditional physicians — includes four years of undergraduate work, followed by four years in an accredited podiatric medical school, followed by a three- or four-year hospital-based podiatry residency. Optional one- to two-year fellowship in foot and ankle reconstruction, surgical limb salvage, sports medicine, plastic surgery, pediatric foot and ankle surgery, and wound care is also available.

Medical school in the United States is a graduate program with the purpose of educating physicians in the undifferentiated field of medicine. Such schools provide a major part of the medical education in the United States. Most medical schools in the US confer upon graduates a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, while some confer a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Most schools follow a similar pattern of education, with two years of classroom and laboratory based education, followed by two years of clinical rotations in a teaching hospital where students see patients in a variety of specialties. After completion, graduates must complete a residency before becoming licensed to practice medicine.

In Canada, a medical school is a faculty or school of a university that trains future medical doctors and usually offers a three- to five-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery degree. There are currently 17 medical schools in Canada with an annual admission success rate normally below 7.5%. As of 2021, approximately 11,500 students were enrolled in Canadian medical schools graduating 2,900 students per year.

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is a private medical school in Kalamazoo, Michigan. WMed was established in 2012 and confers the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, as well as Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree and the Master of Science in Medical Engineering degree. WMed is a collaboration between Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Ascension Borgess and Bronson Healthcare. The inaugural class of 54 students started in August 2014.

Marcus Powlowski is a Canadian Member of Parliament who was elected to represent the riding of Thunder Bay—Rainy River in the 2019 Canadian federal election. Powlowski was also named a chief in Ambae, Vanuatu with the title of Vera Liu. He is married to Mirasol Añora Powlowski and has six children.

Bonnie J. Fraser Henry is a Canadian physician and public servant who has been the provincial health officer at the British Columbia Ministry of Health since 2014. Henry is also a clinical associate professor at the University of British Columbia. She is a specialist in public health and preventive medicine, and is a family doctor. In her role as provincial health officer, Henry notably led the response to COVID-19 in British Columbia (BC).

Monika Dutt is a Nova Scotia based Canadian medical doctor, and a past chair of Canadian Doctors for Medicare. She is known for taking advocacy stances on social justice matters. She is a specialist in Public Health and Preventive Medicine and also in Family Medicine.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Adil Shamji</span> Canadian politician

Adil Shamji is a Canadian physician and politician who has represented Don Valley East in the Ontario Legislative Assembly since 2022, as a member of the Ontario Liberal Party. Before entering politics, Shamji was an emergency physician at Michael Garron Hospital. He was born in Canada to Gujarati immigrant parents from East Africa. Shamji ran as a candidate for the 2023 Ontario Liberal Party leadership election. He withdrew from the race on September 28, 2023 and endorsed Bonnie Crombie.
