List of oldest military units and formations in continuous operation

While modern standing armies were first developed in the 15th century, the defining terminology for contemporary military units and formations, such as company, battalion, regiment etc. mostly arose in the early modern period, during the 16th and 17th centuries.[ citation needed ]

Only units that are still extant are included, while contemporary refoundings of older units are excluded.

The King's Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard is a bodyguard of the British Monarch. The oldest British military corps still in existence, it was created by King Henry VII in 1485 after the Battle of Bosworth Field. The Yeomen today are purely ceremonial, and perform ceremonial and royal duties at State Opening of Parliament, The Most Noble Order of the Garter, Maundy Service, Royal Garden Parties, Investitures, Coronations, plus other events such as Royal Weddings and Royal Funerals, Epiphany, State Visits and Diplomatic Receptions. They are all based and administered from St James's Palace. [4]

The Danish Division, short DDIV, is the only remaining military land division in Denmark. It was created on 1 January 1997 as the successor of Jutland Division. It is one of the now-three Divisions of Multinational Corps North East, the German-Danish-Polish Corps, the successor to the former German-Danish Allied Land Forces Schleswig-Holstein and Jutland (LANDJUT), a NATO Allied Forces Northern Europe formation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Schleswig Regiment of Foot</span> Military unit

The Schleswig Regiment of Foot is a Royal Danish Army infantry regiment. On 1 January 2001, the regiment was merged with the Queen's Life Regiment to form the Prince's Life Regiment. In 2018, it was announced that the regiment would be reestablished on 1 January 2019 as a light infantry battalion.

The Engineer Regiment is a regiment in the Royal Danish Army with base in Skive in Jutland. The soldiers of this regiment are trained in skills such as demolition, bomb disposal, bridge construction, defending against chemical, biological and radiological hazards, and much more. The engineer troops are also trained to fight alongside infantry regiments in combat zones if needed.

The award system of Denmark, and especially the regulations for who is allowed to wear which medals, is one of great variation. The current honour-system has been created one step at a time since the 16th century. The system consists of royal orders and medals, official/governmental medals and some few private medals that have been approved by the monarch.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">296th Infantry Regiment</span> Infantry regiment of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard

The 296th Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard consisting mostly of Puerto Rican enlisted soldiers and officers. Today, only its 1st Battalion remains active; being allotted to the 92nd Military Police Brigade of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard. The 296th is composed by the first battalion of infantrymen that engaged in combat as a Puerto Rico National Guard unit, as the 65th Infantry Regiment was, at the time, a regular Army unit. It is one of several National Guard units with colonial roots.

The Army Combat and Fire Support Centre, formerly Army Combat School, was a training centre for the Royal Danish Army, with the purpose of developing, educating and training various forms of combat for infantry, armor, reconnaissance and fire support.

The following is a hierarchical outline for the Danish armed forces at the end of the Cold War. It is intended to convey the connections and relationships between units and formations. In wartime all Danish military units would have come under the joint West German/Danish NATO command Allied Forces Baltic Approaches (BALTAP). BALTAP was a principal subordinate command under the Allied Forces Northern Europe Command (AFNORTH). The commander-in-chief of (BALTAP) was always a Danish Lieutenant General or Vice Admiral, who had the designation Commander Allied Forces Baltic Approaches (COMBALTAP). In peacetime BALTAP had only a few communication units allocated and all other units remained under national command of West Germany's Bundeswehr and Denmark's Forsvaret.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Infantry Regiment "Soria" No. 9</span> Military unit

The Infantry Regiment "Soria" No. 9 is a light infantry regiment of the Spanish Army. Founded in 1509 as a tercio, it is one of the world's oldest still operational units. Today it is garrisoned on the Canary Islands and has fought in Afghanistan.
