AllMusic awarded the album 4 stars. [3] The LA Times' Bill Kohlhaase noted "the highlight here is Roberts' five-part suite "Saturday/Sunday" with its acoustic sensibilities and smart interplay between Roberts, pianist Django Bates and percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciyan. Moving easily between jazz rhythms, tribal beats and classically influenced passages, the piece marks Roberts as a composer willing to overlook the usual boundaries between jazz and progressive music". Tim Berne is an American avant-garde jazz saxophonist and record label owner. His primary instruments are the alto and baritone saxophones.
Hank Roberts is an American jazz cellist and vocalist. He plays the electric cello, and his style is a mixture of rock, jazz, avant-garde, folk, and classical influences. He emerged with the downtown New York City jazz scene of the 1980s and is associated with its post-modern tendencies.
Arto Tunchboyachyan is an Armenian American avant-garde folk and jazz multi-instrumentalist and singer of Armenian descent. He fronts his own group called the Armenian Navy Band, and is also a member of the instrumental quartet Night Ark.
Django Bates is a British jazz musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist, band leader and educator. He plays the piano, keyboards and the tenor horn. Bates has been described as "one of the most talented musicians Britain has produced... his work covers the entire spectrum of jazz, from early jazz through to bebop and free jazz to jazz-rock fusion."
