Locomotives of the Stockton and Darlington Railway

The 1825 to 1863 Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) was the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives [1] . Its first line connected collieries near Shildon with Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington, and was officially opened on 27 September 1825. While coal waggons were hauled by steam locomotives from the start, passengers were carried in coaches drawn by horses until carriages hauled by steam locomotives were introduced in 1833.

The company was taken over by the North Eastern Railway in 1863, transferring 200 route miles (320 route kilometres) of line and about 160 locomotives, but continued to operate independently as the Darlington Section until 1876. The opening of the S&DR was seen as proof of the effectiveness of steam railways and its anniversary was celebrated in 1875, 1925 and 1975. Much of the original route is now served by the Tees Valley Line, operated by Northern.

Locomotives were sometimes renumbered, and the old numbers re-used for new locomotives. The following list does not include all renumberings.

Disposal

When the North Eastern Railway (NER) took over the Stockton and Darlington Railway (SDR) in 1863, the SDR stock included 157 locomotives. The SDR locomotives were administered by a separate committee until 1873. The SDR locomotives were renumbered in 1873, mostly by the addition of 1000. In September 1875 there were still 55 SDR locomotives in existence. [59]

Timothy Hackworth was an English steam locomotive engineer who lived in Shildon, County Durham, England and was the first locomotive superintendent of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) produced several classes of locomotive, mostly to the designs of Nigel Gresley, characterised by a three-cylinder layout with a parallel boiler and round-topped firebox. It produced the most famous locomotive of its day, 4468 'Mallard', the holder of the world steam locomotive speed record. It also built the world-famous 4472 'Flying Scotsman'. However, its locomotive inheritance was much greater than just the 'A4 Class', it also produced highly successful mixed-traffic and freight designs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">NER 66 Aerolite</span>

North Eastern Railway (NER) No. 66 Aerolite is a preserved British steam locomotive. It was classified X1 by the LNER. It was capable of reaching 55 mph.

Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, 0-2-4 represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, two powered driving wheels on one axle, and four trailing wheels on two axles.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LNWR 19in Express Goods Class</span>

The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) 19in Express Goods Class, otherwise known as the Experiment Goods Class was a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives. They were essentially a smaller wheeled version of the Whale's Experiment Class and were an early attempt at a mixed traffic engine.

The LD&ECR class A was a class of 0-6-2T steam locomotives of the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway. An initial batch of eight was ordered and built in 1895. An order for 15 more was placed in 1899 but five of these were not delivered because the LD&ECR was unable to pay for them. The undelivered locomotives were re-sold by Kitson & Co. to the Hull and Barnsley Railway and became H&BR Class F1. There are some detail differences between the LD&ECR class A and the H&BR Class F1 but these were the result of later modifications.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LNWR Special Tank</span>

The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Special Tank was a class of 0-6-0ST steam locomotives. They were a saddle tank version of the LNWR DX Goods class. A total of 278 locomotives were built from 1870 onwards, of which five survived to be inherited by British Railways in 1948. These five were in departmental stock: four – numbered 3, 6, 7 (2329) and 8 Earlstown (2359) – as Carriage Department shunters at Wolverton Works; and No. 3323, a shunter at Crewe Works.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LNWR 4ft Shunter</span>

The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) 4ft Shunter was a class of 0-4-0ST steam locomotives. Introduced in 1863 by Ramsbottom, 26 were built in 1863–1865, 10 in 1870, 10 in 1872, and 10 in 1892. The last three of the latter batch were soon rebuilt as 0-4-2ST crane tanks. They survived into LMS ownership in 1923 and the last one was withdrawn in 1933.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LNWR DX Goods class</span>

The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) DX Goods class was a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive, designed by John Ramsbottom for freight duties. 943 were constructed, making them the largest single class of steam locomotives built in the United Kingdom. Despite this, none were preserved.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">NER Class B1</span>

The NER B and B1 Classes were two classes of 0-6-2 tank locomotives designed by Thomas William Worsdell for heavy freight and mineral on the North Eastern Railway, introduced in 1886. They were tank engine versions of the NER C1 Class 0-6-0, using both simple expansion and also the von Borries configuration for two-cylinder compound locomotives. Both types were later rebuilt using superheated steam and the compounds were also rebuilt as simple expansion locomotives, and eventually formed a single class. Many of the superheated locomotives were also later returned to saturated steam as their original boilers wore out. As a result the classes have had a very complex mechanical history.

The North Eastern Railway was formed by merger in 1854 and merged into the London and North Eastern Railway at the grouping in 1923. Between those dates five men held the post of Locomotive Superintendent.

The LD&ECR class C was a class of 0-4-4T steam locomotives of the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway.

The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Precursor class was a class of forty 2-4-0 steam locomotives designed by F. W. Webb and built at the railway's Crewe Works between 1874 and 1879.
