The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham,Alabama,which is made up of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for most sports;in football,it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS),formerly referred to as Division I-AA.

The MEAC/SWAC Challenge is an annual historically black college (HBCU) football game showcasing a team from each of the two NCAA Division I conferences made up entirely of HBCUs—the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The series began in 2005 and initially paired the defending conference champions,although the selection process was broadened in 2007 to include non-champions as well. Following the 2022 game,the MEAC leads the series with 10 wins to the SWAC's five. The Challenge is televised nationally on ESPN and is owned by ESPN Events. It was historically associated with the Labor Day weekend,but starting in 2021 has instead taken place a week earlier during college football's Week 0.

The team is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference,which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. James Walter Hopson is an American football coach and former player. In 2016,Hopson made history as the only head coach in the history of the state of Mississippi to guide two different in-state universities to bowl games when he led the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to a victory in the New Orleans Bowl. During his head-coaching tenure with the University of Southern Mississippi (2016–2020),Hopson ushered the Golden Eagles to four straight bowl-eligible seasons,with his defenses and offenses ranking in the top-5 and top-25 in the NCAA,respectively. Additionally,in his four full seasons from 2016 to 2019,Hopson guided the University of Southern Mississippi to 20 conference wins,which made him the second-winningest coach in Conference-USA during that span.
Felecia Diane McInnis Nave is an American chemical engineer and academic administrator. She is the 20th president of Alcorn State University and the first female to serve in the position.
The 2020 Alabama A&M Bulldogs football team represented Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Bulldogs were led by third-year head coach Connell Maynor and played their home games at Louis Crews Stadium in Huntsville,Alabama as members of the East Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. On July 20,2020,the Southwestern Athletic Conference announced that it would not play fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
