MSC Messina is a Liberian-flagged container ship. [1] The ship is operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company which is the second largest container operator in the world. It was built in 1995. [2]
On 24 June 2021, the ship caught fire in the midway of the Indian Ocean halfway between Sri Lanka and Malacca Strait. [3] The fire broke in the engine room of the ship, at some 480 nautical miles (890 km; 550 mi) away from the Great Basses Reef Lighthouse, Kirinda. [4] [5] The fire in incident took place when the ship departed from the Colombo Port to Singapore with around 28 crew members on board. [3] It was revealed that the ship arrived to Sri Lanka on 22 June 2021. On 26 June 2021, the fire was brought under control by the crew members of the ship by using carbon dioxide to douse the fire. [6] The Indian Coast Guard came to the rescue immediately as it deployed one of its ships and aircraft to provide assistance to the container ship during the rescue operations. [7] At least one crew member was reportedly missing during the fire incident and search operations began. [8] [9] On 27 June 2021, the ship departed to Singapore once the fire was successful extinguished from the engine room. [10]
Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) is an international shipping line founded by Gianluigi Aponte in Italy in 1970, with headquarters in Switzerland since 1978. The privately held company is owned by the Aponte family. It has been the largest container shipping line since late 2021, after overtaking fellow 2M Alliance member Maersk. The company operates in all major ports of the world.
Mangala Pinsiri Samaraweera was a Sri Lankan politician. He was the first openly gay politician from Sri Lanka. He was the Minister of Finance from 2017 to 2019, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, for two terms from 2005 to 2007 and 2015 to 2017. His career as a politician spanned over 20 years, holding several ministerial portfolios in different governments. He was regarded as one of the prominent politicians from Nuwara Eliya.

MSC Flaminia is a German container ship which caught fire on 14 July 2012, claiming three lives and forcing the crew to abandon ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. After the fire had been brought under control, the stricken container ship was towed to Europe and arrived at Wilhelmshaven, Germany, on 9 September 2012. In March 2013, she departed Wilhelmshaven for Mangalia, Romania for repairs which were finished in July 2014.

He belongs to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. He was educated at Richmond College, Galle and University of Peradeniya. The first case of the virus in Sri Lanka was confirmed on 27 January 2020, after a 44-year-old Chinese woman from Hubei, China, was admitted to the Infectious Disease Hospital in Angoda, Sri Lanka. Lanka Sathosa also known as Sathosa is a wholesale and retail chain located in Sri Lanka. It is considered to be the largest state-owned retail chain in the country and was established in 2005. Sathosa was incorporated as a state-owned enterprise under Companies Act no 7 of 2007 and it is regulated by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. On 25 November 2020, he was tested positive for COVID-19 and was transferred to a different prison. On 16 June 2021, he was granted bail by the Court of Appeal after spending jail term for nearly one year.
MT New Diamond is a very large crude carrier. On 3 September 2020, the ship caught fire off the western coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in the death of a Filipino crew member. After burning intermittently for almost a week, the fire was reported to be extinguished by 11 September. In July 2021 the ship was beached at Gadani Ship Breaking Yard.

X-Press Pearl was a Singapore-registered Super Eco 2700–class container ship. The vessel entered service in February 2021 and was around 186 metres (610 ft) long. It was operated by X-Press Feeders.
X-Press Feeders/Sea Consortium is a container shipping group operating out of Singapore. It is the 17th largest operator by capacity according to the Top 100 ranking for 2021 published by the maritime portal Alphaliner. It feeds transshipment hubs and ports in East and Southeast Asia, Indian subcontinent, the Persian Gulf, Mediterranean and Europe.
The 2022 Sri Lankan protests are a series of ongoing protests by various non-partisan protesters, mainly the general public and opposition political parties against the government of president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, accused of mismanaging the economy which has resulted in an economic crisis with severe inflation, daily blackouts of 10 to 13 hours, a shortage of fuel and many essential items. The key demand of the protesters is that the government run by the Rajapaksa family immediately resign, paving the way for a completely new set of qualified and democratic rulers. Most protesters were unaligned with any political party, and some expressed discontent with the political opposition. The protesters commonly chanted slogans such as "Go home Gota", ''Go Home Rajapaksas'' and "Gota pissek". The protests have been mainly staged by general public including teachers, students, doctors, nurses, IT professionals, farmers, lawyers, few police officers, social activists, sportspersons and engineers without any political affiliation and most of the protestors are considered to be apolitical. Few protests have been carried out by individuals with political connections and political parties but have relatively fallen apart due to lack of support. The youth population of Sri Lanka has come to the forefront as they have been carrying the protests in Galle Face Green by chanting slogans "You have messed with the wrong generation" and "Don't play with our future".
