MTV Hive was MTV's online music video portal and its editorial mouthpiece for coverage of indie music genres, providing music news and music on-demand. It is the successor to the former MTV Music website in the United States, which was merged into MTV Hive as of January 2012. On October 31, 2013, MTV Hive tweeted that it was transforming into @MTVArtists, a Twitter feed. The MTV Hive web site has not been actively updated since December 2013, but MTV currently provides similar news and features in the music section of its main web site, at mtv.com/music . All content has been merged into MTV News and MTV Artists Platform.

Historical background

MTV Music (also known as MTVM) was a music video and music sharing website launched on October 28, 2008 by MTV Networks. [1] Since 2012, it has been merged with and redirected to the MTV Hive website.

The MTV Music website offered a large collection of music videos that dated back to the early 1980s. The library included more than 16,000 videos. [1] [2] According to Alexa as of October 30, 2008, in the two days from launch the site had over 75,000 hits. [3]

Shockwave.com, or Shockwave, is an online and offline video games distributor and game portal. It is owned by Addicting Games, Inc., based in Los Angeles, California, United States. It was launched by Macromedia on August 2, 1999, to promote the company's Shockwave and Flash players, both used on the website. As of 2005, the website had 22 million users. By 2010, it hosted more than 400 games in a variety of genres.

Paramount Global is an American multinational entertainment conglomerate that has been the subject of criticisms and controversies about its products and services. Criticism of Paramount Global has included the former Viacom Inc.'s announced plans of looking into splitting the company into two publicly traded companies. The company was not only dealing with a stagnating stock price, but also the rivalry between Leslie Moonves and Tom Freston, longtime heads of MTV Networks. In addition, the company was facing issues after MTV was banned from producing any more Super Bowl halftime shows after the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy in 2004.

MTV Artists was an online music portal, owned by Viacom, intended to generate traffic to web and video content owned by the company and give more opportunity to artists. It was initially launched in August 2012 in beta. With the artists platform any musician could connect with fans through MTV, VH1, and CMT, both online and on-air. The service never made it out of beta, though the web pages have not been taken down, and are primarily populated with third party meta-data, instead of MTV original content. Features allowing artists to upload their music were removed from the site after launch.

Hive Social is a microblogging service and mobile app. The app received news coverage during the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk in November 2022.
