Magali Ama (born November 30, 1974) is a French model, actress, and writer.
Ama was discovered at age 16 while studying ballet at The Opera House in Nice. [2] After a summer spent modeling in New York City, she abandoned her original plan to move to Japan for pre-medical education, and instead pursued modeling full-time. [3] Ama was featured on the covers of Cosmopolitan [3] and Glamour , [4] but also suffered from the eating disorder bulimia for seven years while working as a fashion model, [5] and sought help after passing out at a photo shoot. [4] After treatment she began visiting schools to share her experience with students. [6] She also appeared in television and film roles, including supporting and minor roles in House of D [7] and Taxi . [8] In 2009, with co-author Claire Mysko, Ama published the book Does This Pregnancy Make Me Look Fat?, about body changes and social expectations during pregnancy. [9] The Los Angeles Daily News praised the book for taking on issues around pregnancy "in a hip, compassionate way". [10]
An eating disorder is a mental disorder defined by abnormal eating behaviors that adversely affect a person's physical or mental health. Types of eating disorders include binge eating disorder, where the patient eats a large amount in a short period of time; anorexia nervosa, where the person has an intense fear of gaining weight and restricts food or overexercises to manage this fear; bulimia nervosa, where individuals eat a large quantity (binging) then try to rid themselves of the food (purging); pica, where the patient eats non-food items; rumination syndrome, where the patient regurgitates undigested or minimally digested food; avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), where people have a reduced or selective food intake due to some psychological reasons; and a group of other specified feeding or eating disorders. Anxiety disorders, depression and substance abuse are common among people with eating disorders. These disorders do not include obesity. People often experience comorbidity between an eating disorder and OCD. It is estimated 20–60% of patients with an ED have a history of OCD.

The thin ideal is the concept of the ideally slim female body. The common perception of this ideal is a woman who possesses a slender, feminine physique with a small waist and little body fat. The size that the thin ideal woman should be is decreasing while the rate of female obesity is simultaneously increasing, making this iconic body difficult for women to maintain. This creates a gap between the actual appearance of an average woman’s body and its expected appearance which, depending on the extent to which a woman internalizes the necessity of living up to this ideal for her well-being and peace of mind, may have serious psychological effects.

This thin ideal represents less than 15% of the American population.
