In the 1850s John Ringen, a German immigrant to the United States, began a tinshop in St. Louis, Missouri. His business prospered and, in 1870, he took in a partner, George August Kahle, who had immigrated to America from Germany in 1867. The business sold housewares, early washing machines, and cooking stoves they called "quick meals".
In 1881, George Kahle persuaded his brothers-in-law, Charles and Louis Stockstrom, to set up a shop to manufacture stoves. [1] These four principals then organized two corporations, the Quick Meal Stove Company and the Ringen Stove Company.
Quick Meal manufactured the stoves, with Ringen Stove handling sales and distribution of the entire output of Quick Meal's production. The phenomenal growth of these two companies during the 1880s and 1890s led to the merger of eight other stove companies in St. Louis, Chicago and Cleveland in 1901 to form the American Stove Company. [1] American Stove introduced the first oven temperature control device in 1914.
In 1929, it began using the brand name Magic Chef. The Magic Chef name was so successful as an oven and stove brand that American Stove Company changed its name to Magic Chef, Inc. in 1951. [2] [3] [4] The company remained well known for its gas stoves, but attempts to spread the brand to other household appliances were unsuccessful.
In 1957, it was merged with the Food Giant Markets of California. [5] [6] In 1958, it was sold to Dixie Products, [7] [8] a small stove company of Cleveland, Tennessee, after selling off a few underperforming divisions of Magic Chef. [9]
In 1974, Magic Chef bought the Norge Village Laundry & Dry Cleaners chain. [10]
By 1986, the company had become the 249th largest industrial company in the nation, and was sold to Maytag for $740 million. [11] Magic Chef also made home furnaces and air conditioners; that operation was sold to Lennox International in 1988. [12]
Whirlpool Corporation acquired Maytag Corporation in 2006. [13] [14] Magic Chef has been spun out to CNA International Inc./MC Appliance Corporation, [15] [16] which imports and markets small appliances under several brand names.

His revival of Anchor Steam beer inspired many other brewers to follow, and he is often considered the father of modern microbreweries. Elmore Manufacturing Company was a manufacturer of veteran and brass era automobiles and bicycles (1893–97), headquartered at 504 Amanda Street, Clyde, Ohio, from 1893 until 1912. The company took its name from a small parcel of land in Clyde with the name Elmore associated with it where a stave mill was established originally, then evolved into bicycle production. The village of Elmore, Ohio is located 20 mi (32.2 km) to the east. Founded by Harmon Von Vechten Becker and his two sons, James and Burton, the Elmore used a two-stroke engine design, in straight twin or single-cylinder versions. They later produced a straight-3 followed by a straight-4 beginning in 1906 until production ended in 1912. The company advertising slogan was "The Car That Has No Valves", referring to the two-stroke engine.

John Inglis and Company was a Canadian manufacturing firm which made weapons for the United Kingdom and British Commonwealth military forces during the World War II era, then later became a major appliance manufacturer. The company was started in 1919 by The Hobart Manufacturing Company to produce stand mixers; the H-5 is the first model that was introduced. Laumeier Sculpture Park is a 105-acre open-air museum and sculpture park located in Sunset Hills, Missouri, near St. Louis and is maintained in partnership with St. Louis County Parks and Recreation Department. Dortch Stove Works is an historic stove manufacturing plant in Franklin, Tennessee. It was built in 1929 by Allen Manufacturing Company, then based in Nashville, Tennessee. During its manufacturing prime, the plant produced stoves and ranges under Allen Manufacturing Company, Dortch Stove Works, and Magic Chef Inc., as well as bedding and furniture under Jamison Bedding Company. Now, the plant is known as The Factory at Franklin, and operates as a mixed dining, retail, and entertainment center.
The Norge brand of appliances was originally manufactured by the Norge Appliance Company, which was once a division of BorgWarner and later a division of Fedders. The Norge name was acquired in 1979 by Magic Chef, which in turn was absorbed by Maytag in 1986. Since 2006, Maytag is a part of Whirlpool Corporation.
Kenmore is an American brand of household appliances, cookware, floorcare, grills, HVAC equipment and other home items owned and licensed by Transformco, an affiliate of ESL Investments. Previously they were a subsidiary brand of Sears Holdings, but after Sears Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 15, 2018 they were acquired by Transformco, formed in 2019 after acquiring the assets of Sears Holdings Corporation.
