Barrister Mahbubur Rahman is a retired Bangladeshi police officer and the former chief of the Criminal Investigation Department. [1]

Early life and education

Rahman completed his graduate studies from the University of Dhaka in 1985. [2]

In 2009, Rahman completed his Law degree from a university in the United Kingdom and joined Lincoln's Inn. [2]

Career

Rahman joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in December 1989 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. [2] From 1991 to 1995, he served as the Assistant Police Commissioner of the Khulna Metropolitan Police and later the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. [2] In 1997, he served in the United Nations peacekeeping force in Angola and in Kosovo in 1999. [2]

Rahman served as the Superintendent of Police of Chittagong District, Dhaka District, and Tangail District. [2] In January 2008, he was serving as the Superintendent of Police of Dhaka District and was elected General Secretary of Bangladesh Police Service Association. [3] He was promoted to Assistant Inspector General and later Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police on 26 May 2011 and station in the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in 2011. [2] [4] [5] He was the Joint Commissioner of Traffic of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in 2011. [6]

From October 2013 to 20 November 2014, Rahman was the Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police. [2] [7] From 26 November 2014 to 4 Jun 2015, Rahman served as the Additional Police Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. [2]

From 4 June 2015 to 31 March 2016, Rahman served as the head of the Police Bureau of Investigation. [2] He was then transferred to Bangladesh Police headquarters where he worked as the head of the Interpol National Central Bureau. [2] From 17 June 2019 to 5 May 2020, he served as the head of Highway Police. [2] [8] On 3 May 2020, he was appointed the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department. [9] On 31 July 2021, he was made the additional inspector general of police of a term of one year on a contractual basis after reaching retirement age. [10] [11] The Criminal Investigation Department started its investigation against Pori Moni. [12] [13] His tenure at the Criminal Investigation Department was extended by one year by circular issued by the Ministry of Public Administration and signed by Deputy Secretary Oliur Rahman. [11]

Rahman sent a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs to establish a Cyber Police Station for the Criminal Investigation Department. [14]

The 21 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. The attacks targeted Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was injured in the attack.The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated to this date.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is a specialized intelligence and investigation wing of the Bangladesh Police. It is headquartered in Malibagh, Dhaka and maintains a training school named the Detective Training School. Personnel attached to this wing essentially work in plain clothes. Mohammad Ali Mia, BPM, PPM is the head of the Criminal Investigation Department.

Detective Branch is a specialized unit of Bangladesh Police. According to Human Rights Watch, there is extensive documentation of human rights violation by Detective Branch and Rapid Action Battalion. According to Human Rights Watch, 70 percent of extrajudicial deaths involving the police involved Detective Branch.

Habibur Rahman is a Bangladeshi police officer. He is the 36th Commissioner of DMP. Prior to join here he was head of the Tourist Police. From 2019 to 2022, he was Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Dhaka Range, and he was DIG of administration and discipline at the police headquarters in Dhaka before then.

Mohammad Khoda Baksh Chowdhury is a former Inspector General of Police of Bangladesh Police. He is one of the convicts of the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack case.

Shafiqul Islam is a retired police officer who served as the 34th Police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was made the DMP commissioner on 14 September 2019. He previously served as the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun is a Bangladeshi police officer and the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh Police since 30 September 2022. Previously he served as Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). He was made the DG of RAB in April 2020. Prior to join RAB, he was the chief of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Naba Bikram Kishore Tripura is one of the prominent government official who holds different position during his government service holder. He was the Chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board. He served as Secretary of Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs from 2011 to 2018.. He served As an Ambassador at Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Bangladesh) from 2010 to 2011. Before that, he was holding the position of Additional Inspector General. of Bangladesh Police which is the Second in Command on Bangladesh Police.

Munshi Atiqur Rahman is a retired Bangladesh Police officer who served as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in the Criminal Investigation Department. He was charged and convicted for attempting to cover up the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack.

Abdul Kahar Akond was a Bangladeshi police officer who served as the additional DIG of police in the Criminal Investigation Department.
