Kortney Jamaal Pollard (born January 12, 1988), known professionally as Mali Music, [2] is an American singer-songwriter and record producer from Savannah, Georgia. His first two studio albums, The Coming (2008) and The 2econd Coming (2009) were released independently through ByStorm Records and met with critical acclaim. [3] In 2011, he was the first inspirational artist to be part of BET's "Music Matters" series. [4] He signed with RCA Records [5] to release his first major-label single "Beautiful" the following year, [6] which preceded his third album and major label debut, Mali Is... (2014). [7] The album received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. [8]

Career

Pollard was born in Phoenix, Arizona. He learned to play the piano at age 5 and at age 11 was active in the ministry of music in his church. [9] In 2011, he signed a short-lived contract with Akon's label Konvict Muzik. [10]

The 2econd Coming was released on October 20, 2009, Ready Aim & Beautiful on February 26, 2013 and Mali Is... on June 17, 2014.

An influential figure in modern world music, he rose to prominence in 2004, following the release of his debut single "Locked Up" and its follow up, "Lonely". Styled in hip hop and R&B respectively, both songs would precede the release of Akon's debut studio album Trouble (2004), which was met with critical and commercial success.

Konvict Muzik is a record label founded by R&B singer Akon. Other than Akon, artists such as T-Pain, Kat DeLuna, Mali Music, Red Cafe, Dolla, Ya Boy, and Costa Titch have signed to the label during their careers. At the beginning of most Konvict Muzik artists' songs there is the sound of the clank of a jail cell, followed by Akon uttering "Konvict". In 2022, it was announced that the label was rebranding into Konvict Kulture. Fotemah Mba held the executive position of Vice President of A&R for the label.

R. City is a hip hop duo formed by Virgin Islander brothers Theron "Uptown AP" Thomas and Timothy "A.I." Thomas in 2003. Primarily known as a songwriting and record production team, the duo amassed numerous credits for prominent music industry artists prior to signing with Kemosabe Records, an imprint of RCA Records in 2014. The following year, their single "Locked Away" peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 preceding the release of their debut studio album, What Dreams Are Made Of (2015).

Cydel Charles Young, known professionally as CyHi the Prynce, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. In 2009, he signed his first major-label recording contract in a joint venture with Akon's Konvict Muzik and Def Jam Recordings. In 2010, Young gained further mainstream attention for his work with rapper Kanye West after appearing on his highly acclaimed fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010). Young would also heavily co-write lyrics for West's discography in the following years, resulting in six Grammy Award nominations for Best Rap Song.

Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds, known professionally as Daniel Caesar, is a Canadian R&B singer-songwriter. After independently building a following through the release of two critically acclaimed EPs, Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim's Paradise (2015), Caesar released his debut studio album, Freudian, in August 2017, which garnered widespread critical acclaim. He released his second studio album, Case Study 01, in June 2019. In March 2021, Caesar was featured alongside Giveon on Justin Bieber's single "Peaches", which serves as his first number-one song on the US Billboard Hot 100. More recently, Daniel released his third studio album NEVER ENOUGH in April of 2023 as his first release under label, Republic Records.
