Mame Khan is an Indian playback and folk singer from Rajasthan, India. [2] [3] [4] [5] He has been playback singer for numerous Hindi films such as Luck By Chance (2009), I Am (2010), No One Killed Jessica (2011), Mirzya (2016) and Sonchiriya (2019). [6] [7] Khan was featured on Coke Studio @ MTV (second season) along with Amit Trivedi, the duo performed the track Chaudhary. [2] [8] He received the Best Folk Single Award at Global Indian Music Academy Awards (GiMA) 2016. [9] Mame Khan was first ever Folk artist to walk the Red Carpet at The Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and to perform at the Indian pavilion at Cannes. Mame Khan's most recent folk, Sufi, fusion album named "Desert Rose" was released on 13th October 2022.
Mame Khan was born in Satto, a small village near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. [10] He belongs to the Manganiyar community of Rajasthan, India. He was exposed to the folk music of the Manganiyar community since childhood. [6] His father, Ustad Rana Khan was also a Rajasthani folk singer. [6] [9] At the age of 14, he was given a six-year scholarship by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations to pursue his studies in music and arts. [11]
Khan made his singing debut in Bollywood with Shankar Mahadevan for the film Luck By Chance in 2009. [1] However, he shot into the spotlight, when he appeared in an episode of Coke Studio @ MTV (season 2), featuring the song Chaudhary in collaboration with music director Amit Trivedi in 2012. [2] [10] Mame also performed another title Badri badariya at Coke Studio @ MTV, where he collaborated with singer Mili Nair. [3] He sang for movies like Mirzya , I Am , No One Killed Jessica and Sonchiriya . [1] [12] He also lent his voice for a Hindi song in Malayalam film, Monsoon Mangoes . [1]
In October 2015, Khan released his debut album, Mame Khan's Desert Sessions, which was crowd funded. [13] [3] [14] He sang the national anthem for Hotstar and Star Sports's 2015 Pro Kabaddi League season. [15] In December 2016, he released a single, Sanu Ik Pal Chain Na Ave, which was a combination of Punjabi and Rajasthani folk music. [16] In December 2017, he had collaboration with composer duo Salim–Sulaiman for McDowell's No.1's No.1 Yaari Jam's Yaari song. [17] He also sang for television commercials for clients such as Samsung [18] and Tanishq. [19] Mame Khan has been the voice for the nutrition campaign "Mhari Champion" by ICDS and the Government of Rajasthan.
He was also a part of Shankar Mahadevan's folk project titled My Country, My Music. [3] He was the lead vocalist of Roysten Abel's show, The Manganiyar Seduction, [20] which has been touring the world since 2006. [21] He has performed at some of India's most popular festivals including the NH7 Weekender, [22] Mood Indigo, [23] Repertwahr Festival, [24] Rajasthan Partnership Summit [25] and Sahitya Aaj Tak. [26] In June 2018, he performed with his troupe at the Mumbai's National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), where he also collaborated with Kaushiki Chakraborty. [27] First folk singer to play the opening act at NMACC's Studio Theatre in 2023.

Udit Narayan Jha is an Indian playback singer whose songs have been featured mainly in Hindi films. He has also sung in various other languages including Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Malayalam, Assamese, Bagheli and Maithili. He has won four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards with twenty nominations among many others. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution towards arts and culture. Gurdas Maan is an Indian singer, songwriter and actor mainly associated with Punjabi language music and films. He gained national attention in 1980 with the song "Dil Da Mamla Hai". Since then, he had gone on to record over 34 albums and had written over 305 songs. In 2015 he performed on the song "Ki Banu Dunia Da" with Diljit Dosanjh in MTV Coke studio India that was aired in season 4 episode 5 on MTV India.

Komal Kothari (1929-2004) was an Indian folklorist and ethnomusicologist. Komal Kothari had devoted his life to investigation and documentation of folk traditions of western Rajasthan. Kothari received the honour of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan from the Government of India. Komal Kothari painstakingly worked to preserve the cultural memory and made numerous recordings of folk music. He studied Langa and Manganiyar communities of folk musicians of Thar desert. Komal Kothari was not only a scholar but also a man of action. He co-founded Rupayan Sansthan - Rajasthan Institute of Folklore, in 1960 in the village of Borunda. The institution houses a repository of recordings by Kothari and works to collect, preserve, and disseminate the oral traditions of Rajasthan. Kothari was co-editor of the journal Lok Sanskriti, a journal based on the theme of folk culture. Besides, Kothari arranged international performances of folk artists from Rajasthan in several counries. His monograph on Langas, a folk-musician caste in Rajasthan, was enlivened by an accompanying album of recordings of twelve folk songs sung by Langa artistes. His understanding of desert culture and its connections with ecology endeared him to the environmentalists. He planned a museum based on the ecology of the broom’, to show the technical use of specific types of desert grass for specific purposes. His vision was actualised in the form of Arna Jharna - The Thar Desert Museum of Rajasthan in Borunda, near Jodhpur.Kothari was a scholar of patterns of culture and his expertise enriched both folklore studies and history.
Vidushi Kaushiki Chakraborty is an Indian classical vocalist and a composer. She attended Sangeet Research Academy, and was one of the exponents of Patiala gharana. Her repertoire covers pure classical, Khyals, Dadras, Thumris etc. and several other forms of Indian music. She is the recipient 2005 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the Asia-Pacific category. She is the daughter of Hindustani classical vocalist, Ajoy Chakraborty and she has held performances with him as well as her husband, Parthasarathi Desikan. In 2020, she was awarded Nari Shakti Puraskar. Kaushiki is also a trained Carnatic Classical Vocalist.

Dapu Khan from Ganwari Jat caste was a Rajasthani Folk singer known for entertaining tourists from India and abroad in the fort of Jaisalmer over 30 years. He died at the age of 62 on March 13, 2021, after reportedly suffering a heart attack. Dapu is one of the very few exponents of the Kamaicha, which is often termed as one of the oldest bowed instruments in the world.
