Mandailing Natal, abbreviated as Madina, is a regency in North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. It covers an area of 6,620.70 square kilometres and it had a population of 403,894 people at the 2010 census [2] and 472,886 at the 2020 Census; [3] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 496,975 (comprising 247,811 males and 249,164 females). [1] The capital lies at Panyabungan. The Regency was formerly a part of South Tapanuli Regency until it was created as a separate regency on 23 November 1998. It is the southernmost regency in North Sumatra, and the largest regency by land area in the province, with Langkat Regency second to it.
The regency is divided in two by the Bukit Barisan mountains. The portion to the west of the mountains drains to the west coast of Sumatra, and comprises the districts of Batahan, Sinunukan, Batang Natal, Lingga Bayu, Ranto Baek, Natal and Muara Batang Gadis; it covers an area of 4,037 km2, and had a population of 179,270 in mid 2023. [4] The portion to the east of the mountains comprises the remaining districts of the Regency, all of which drain towards the north; it covers an area of 2,583.7 km2 and had a population of 317,705 in mid 2023.
At the 2010 Census, the regency was divided into eighteen districts (kecamatan). Subsequently, five additional districts (indicated by asterisks in the table below) have been created by the division of existing districts. The twenty-three districts are tabulated below with their areas and their population at the 2010 Census [2] and the 2020 Census, [3] together with the official estimates as at mid 2023. [1] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of administrative villages in each district (totaling 377 rural desa and 27 urban kelurahan), and its post code.

Jombang Regency is a regency of East Java, Indonesia, situated to the southwest of Surabaya. The capital of the regency is the town of Jombang. The regency has an area of 1,159.48 km2 and a population of 1,202,407 at the 2010 census and 1,318,062 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as of mid-2022 was 1,335,972. It became a regency in 1910. It was the birthplace of Abdurrahman Wahid, the 4th president of Indonesia.
Pelalawan is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency was created on 4 October 1999 as a result of the division of Kampar Regency, of which it was previously the eastern 43%. It now has an area of 13,408.72 km² and had a population of 301,829 at the 2010 Census and 390,046 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 410,988. The administrative centre is in the town of Pangkalan Kerinci.
Indragiri Hilir is the most eastern regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency has an area of 13,525.10 km2 and had a population of 661,779 at the 2010 census and 654,909 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 660,747. The administrative centre of the regency is the town of Tembilahan.
Indragiri Hulu is a landlocked regency (kabupaten) of Riau, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The original regency was split in two on 4 October 1999, with the western half being created as a separate Kuantan Singingi Regency. The regency now has an area of 8,198.71 km2 and had a population of 363,442 at the 2010 census, 408,704 at the 2015 census and 444,548 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 464,076. The administrative seat of the regency is located at the town of Rengat.
Kuantan Singingi is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency was created on 4 October 1999 from what had been the western half of Indragiri Hulu Regency. It has an area of 7,656.03 km² and had a population of 292,116 at the 2010 Census and 334,943 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 345,850. The seat of the regency is the town of Teluk Kuantan.
Rokan Hulu is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. Rokan Hulu Regency was created on 4 October 1999 as a result of the division of Kampar Regency, of which it was previously the western 24%. The new Regency was established under Law No. 53 of 1999 and Law No. 11 of 2003 on changes to Law Decree No. 53 of 1999, which is reinforced by the Constitutional Court Decision No. 010 / PUU-1/2004, dated 26 August 2004. It mainly occupies the upper part of the catchment area of the Rokan River, and has an area of 7,588.13 km². It had 474,843 inhabitants at the 2010 Census and 561,385 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 582,679. The administrative centre of the regency is located at Pasir Pengaraian.
South Bengkulu is a regency of Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, on the island of Sumatra. It originally comprised all of that part of Bengkulu Province situated to the southeast of the city of Bengkulu, but on 25 February 2003 this area was split into three parts, with the most southeastern districts split off to form a new Kaur Regency and the most northwestern districts split off to form a new Seluma Regency. The reduced South Bengkulu Regency now covers 1,186.10 km2, and had a population of 142,940 at the 2010 Census and 166,249 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 170,093. The regency's administrative centre is the coastal town of Manna.
Banjarnegara is an inland regency in the southwestern part of Central Java province in Indonesia. The regency covers an area of 1,069.73 km2, and it had a population of 868,913 at the 2010 Census and 1,017,767 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,038,718. Its capital is the town of Banjarnegara.
Batanghari is a regency of Jambi Province in Sumatra, Indonesia. It originally covered a wider area, but on 4 October 1999 this was split between a new Muaro Jambi Regency in the east and a reduced Batang Hari Regency in the west, which now covers an area of 5,804.83 km2. It had a population of 241,334 at the 2010 census and 301,700 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 313,209. The administrative capital is the town of Muara Bulian.
South Labuhanbatu Regency is a regency of North Sumatra, Indonesia, created on 24 June 2008 by being carved out of the southern districts of the existing Labuhanbatu Regency The new South Labuhanbatu Regency covers an area of 3,596 square kilometres and according to the 2010 census it had a population of 277,673, which rose to 314,094 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 320,324. Its administrative headquarters are at Kotapinang.
Serdang Bedagai Regency is a regency on the east coast of North Sumatra facing Malaysia, with 95 km of coastline and covering an area of 1,900.22 square kilometres, divided into seventeen districts (kecamatan), in turn subdivided into 243 villages. Its seat is Sei Rampah. The regency surrounds the independent city of Tebing Tinggi, and also contains a district (kecamatan) by the same name. The name “Serdang Bedagai” was derived from the two Sultanates which formerly existed in the Region; they were Serdang Sultanate and Padang Bedagai Sultanate. The population was 592,922 at the 2010 Census, while the 2020 Census produced a total of 657,490; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 667,998.
South Tapanuli is a regency in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Its seat is the town of Sipirok. This regency was originally very large and contained thousands of towns and villages, including the city of Padang Sidempuan. The areas that have separated from South Tapanuli Regency are the new regencies of Mandailing Natal, Padang Lawas Utara and Padang Lawas, all lying to the south-east of the residual South Tapanuli Regency, plus the city (kota) of Padang Sidempuan. After the division, the regency seat moved to from Padang Sidempuan to Sipirok.
North Tapanuli Regency is a landlocked regency in North Sumatra province, Sumatra, Indonesia. Its capital is Tarutung. The regency covers an area of 3,793.71 square kilometres and it had a population of 278,897 at the 2010 Census and 312,758 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 323,102.
Central Bangka Regency is a regency (kabupaten) of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, Indonesia. It covers an area of 2,155.77 km2 and had a population of 161,075 at the 2010 Census, rising to 198,946 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 205,510 - comprising 106,340 males and 99,170 females. The town of Koba is its regency seat.
Meranti Islands is an archipelago forming a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province and lies off the eastern coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was created on 19 December 2008 by the separating of this archipelago from the mainland regency of Bengkalis. The regency comprises the islands of Tebing Tinggi, Rangsang, Padang, and Merbau, together with minor offshore islands, but does not include Bengkalis Island which is geographically part of the archipelago but remains within Bengkalis Regency. The principal town is Selat Panjang on Tebing Tinggi Island. The regency covers an area of 3,623.93 km2 and had a population of 176,290 at the 2010 Census and 206,116 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2022 was 213,532.
Merangin is a regency (kabupaten) of Jambi Province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was created on 4 October 1999 by the division of the former Sarolangun Bangko Regency into a new Sarolangun Regency and this Merangin Regency. The regency covers an area of 7,668.61 km2, and had a population of 333,206 at the 2010 census and 354,052 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 357,577, comprising 181,850 males and 175,727 females. The administrative capital is the town of Bangko.
East Tanjung Jabung Regency is a regency of Jambi Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency was created on 4 October 1999 by the division of the then Tanjung Jabung Regency into eastern and western halves. It now has an area of 5,085.71 km2 and had a population of 205,272 at the 2010 census and 229,813 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 234,164. The capital lies at Muara Sabak.
West Tanjung Jabung Regency is a regency of Jambi Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency was created on 4 October 1999 by the division of the then Tanjung Jabung Regency into eastern and western halves. It now has an area of 5,009.82 km2 and had a population of 278,741 as at the 2010 census and 317,498 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 326,530. The regency seat is Kuala Tungkal.
Tebo Regency is a regency of Jambi Province, Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra, and was created on 4 October 1999 by the division of the former Bungo Tebo Regency into a new Bungo Regency and this Tebo Regency. The regency has an area of 6,461 km² and had a population of 297,735 at the 2010 Census and 337,669 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 344,816. The regency seat is at the town of Muara Tebo.
Lebong is an inland regency of Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, on the island of Sumatra. It covers an area of 1,665.28 km2, and had a population of 97,091 at the 2010 Census and 106,293 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 107,248. Contrary to the popularly-held belief that the town of Muara Aman is the seat of the government of Lebong Regency, the regency's capital is actually located in neighboring Tubei district, where all the office and judiciary institution is situated. Until 1966 the regency, together with the rest of what is now Bengkulu Province, was part of South Sumatra Province. It formed part of Rejang Lebong Regency until 25 February 2003, when the northwestern districts of that regency were split off to create the new Lebong Regency.
