The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach (formerly the West Palm Beach Public Library) is the public library of the City of West Palm Beach, Florida.
In April 2009, the library relocated into a new facility in City Center in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach, which is 2.5 times larger than the previous building. In the 2015 fiscal year (October 1, 2014 – September 30, 2015) the Library circulated 803,608 items to 106,664 registered card holders.[1] During that same year, the library had 551,674 visitors.[1]
History
The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is the oldest public library in Palm Beach County, Florida. The Library first began as a Free Reading Room for the City of West Palm Beach. The Free Reading Room was located in the city’s first church, the Union Congregational Church on the corner of Datura and Olive Streets. The reading room began in 1895 when Reverend Asbury Caldwell began collecting books for a reading club. Caldwell hoped the reading club would keep construction workers out of the city’s many drinking establishments located along First Street, or “Thirst Street” as it was also known.[2] The reading club floundered when Caldwell left West Palm Beach. In 1899, the library got its official start, housed in a two-story former Palm Beach Yacht Club building donated by Commodore Charles John Clarke, a Palm Beach yachtsman, along with the collection of books from the Reading Room and a $100 donation from Henry Flagler.
On January 26, 1924, the City's first permanent library, an artistic Spanish style building, opened alongside the Women's Club and a band shell in Flagler Park, facing the Intracoastal Waterway. Approximately 7,000 volumes were moved to the new library, and the collection doubled in size shortly after that, much in thanks to $10,000 bequest from the estate of Marie Brown.[3] In spite of severe damage from the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane which left more than half of the books destroyed and two feet of lake water and mud on the floor, the Memorial Library remained open, serving the residents of West Palm Beach until spring 1962.
On April 30, 1962, a new city library designed by architect Norman Robson, was dedicated and opened with much flourish and public comment over its modern, colorful, exterior frieze panels. The name of the library at 100 Clematis Street was changed to the West Palm Beach Public Library. It was planned to allow for expansion for at least twenty years.[4]
On February 21, 2012, the Mandel Foundation [5] awarded a $5 million grant to the West Palm Beach Library Foundation [6] for the enhancement of library programs and services. At this time, the West Palm Beach Public Library was renamed the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach.[7]
Facilities
On April 13, 2009, the Library opened in its present facility at 411 Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach. The four-story library is two and one-half times the size of the previous building.[8]
The first floor contains 50 categories of new books, audio books, periodicals, a Book Sale, New and Popular DVDs and Blu-ray discs, and a Salento café. Wi-Fi is available to the public, free of charge, throughout the library and City Center.
The second floor, which includes both the Technology and TeenSource areas, has 34 PCs in the common area, a teen section with another 4 PCs, and a teen collection made up of books, audio books, graphic novels and video games. Also on this floor are music CDs and DVDs and a computer training lab that seats 24, as well as a smaller 12-seat Life Support Lab for computer training and career advice, and in the future, space for 6 digital audio/video studios. In 2019 the library also opened a comprehensive studio space for creatives on its second floor, named Studio 411, to support its popular and growing range of arts programs.[9]
KidSpace, which includes interactive spaces, 24 Internet PCs plus 5 early literacy PCs, a Homework Center, a parenting collection with comfortable adult seating close to the toddler area, and many books, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, magazines, and CDs, is on the third floor.
The meeting room suite, also on the third floor, has a 150-seat auditorium with theatrical lighting and a projection and sound system that can accommodate movies, theatrical productions and live music events. It also contains a 50-seat meeting room, a large conference room that holds 16 and a small conference room that holds 8. The two larger meeting rooms are equipped for audio-visual demonstrations. These rooms are available to the public for meetings or other types of gatherings when not in use for library programs.
The fourth floor is the Grand Reading Room. It is 270 feet (82m) long with a 35-foot (11m) high barrel-shaped ceiling that gives it a sense of grandeur.[citation needed] Decorated in an elegant yet relaxed Florida style[citation needed], it contains the library's adult book collection, reading tables equipped with power outlets, 50 public PCs, the historical Florida Room, and two group study rooms.[10]
In November 2020, The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)CARES Act funded the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach with a grant to begin offering new services for the community. This will include things like mobile hotspots around the city and areas children can go [11] for "Homework Help". This forward-thinking initiative underscores the library's dedication to providing equitable access to educational resources. Implementation of these services began in 2021 and continues today.[12]
Digital collections
The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach offers access to movies, music, e-books and e-audiobooks and more through various platforms including 3M Cloud Library, Hoopla, RB Digital, Kanopy, and Project Gutenberg for smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and computers.
Freegal Music is a service which provides access to the catalog of artists in Sony Music Entertainment. Library cardholders can download five songs a week when they log in with their barcode and PIN. Three hours of streaming music per day is also available.
Finally, Rocket Languages is web-based language tool in which library patrons can choose from 14 languages including English as a Second Language and Sign Language.[13]
Events and activities
The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach provides programs, classes, lectures, interactive experiences, training, and workshop opportunities. Each month, the library hosts a book club for adults, two for children (and a quarterly family book club), a variety of computer training classes, bilingual events and outreach to the Hispanic community, crafts activities, dance lessons, tai chi, Pilates, yoga, expert talks on health, aging, and finances, and various other popular programs. In January 2015, the library began offering a life-long learning program series called IncreMental-U, including talks by Palm Beach Post columnist Frank Cerebino. The library also enjoys numerous community partnerships which enhance the library's wide variety of activities. Among the numerous and varied children's and teen events are the "Dog Tales" with specially trained therapy dogs that will "listen" to a child reading and gaming and animation workshops. The "Let's Read" program provides specially trained volunteers to read stories to pre-kindergarten through grade 2 children in four local, Title 1 schools.
The Teens' and Children's Homework Centers are each staffed daily by two certified teachers. The Centers feature the latest technology such as MacBook Pros, iPads, and other resources that teenagers and kids would need to complete their homework assignments.
Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach was founded in 1995 and was reconstituted in 2008 to support the new facility. The Friends organization is a group of community library supporters aiding and initiating library projects and programs. Members receive The Friends' newsletter "Among Friends", early notice of registration for certain events, and opportunities to share their talents.[14] Among the many library programs sponsored by the Friends organization, examples include the Friday Night Jazz concerts, which have attracted as many as 350 attendees per performance, and the 92Y Live programs. Live from NY's 92nd Street Y (92YLive) is a live-streamed event that allows people all over the USA to access the Y's cultural and educational programs. The programs provide an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the presenters, as if they were in the New York audience.[15]
Library Foundation
The West Palm Beach Library Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization and independent from the City of West Palm Beach, was formed in the year 2000 with the original mission of working collaboratively with the City of West Palm Beach in a private-public partnership to build a new library. The Foundation, free of any political process or influence, secures financial and in-kind donations to enhance programs, services, collections and technology that the city's operating budget cannot encompass.
In 2009, the Foundation renewed its commitment to elevate the library's programs, services, technology, and collections. It collaborates closely with the Mandel Public Library, strategically directing resources where they can have the most substantial impact. While public funds sustain the library's basic operations, the Foundation's role becomes critical in expanding access to information, enhancing programs, and providing services that align with the community's diverse needs.[6]
Through a strong partnership with the Mandel Public Library, the West Palm Beach Library Foundation determines where support will have the greatest impact. While public or taxpayer dollars provide for the Library's basic operating budget, they are not sufficient to provide full access to the information, programs and services which members of the community need and value. The Foundation's support is necessary to help the Library improve its technology, collections, services and programs.[6]

Sumner Library is a neighborhood library located in the Near-north neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Originally part of the Minneapolis Public Library, it became part of the merged Hennepin County Library in 2008. The Carnegie Library was a haven for Jewish immigrants to the city in the early 20th century. The Minneapolis Public Library moved its entire collection of Yiddish and Hebrew works to the branch library in response to a survey showing that 95% of the patrons were Jewish immigrants, some of whom learned English there and participated in social clubs in the building. The Tudor Revival building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ventura County Library is a free public library system of 12 community libraries and a museum library in Ventura County, California, organized in 1916. The Palm Beach County Library System is the public library system of Palm Beach County, Florida. Its headquarters, the Main Library, is located in an unincorporated area near West Palm Beach, the county seat. The system was established in 1967 and serves Palm Beach County through the Main Library and 17 branch libraries. Its first library branch opened in Tequesta on September 25, 1969, and its first bookmobile five days later. Unlike neighboring Broward and Miami-Dade counties, where most municipalities have joined their county's library system, most municipalities in Palm Beach County continue to operate their own city libraries, leading the county system to focus on the more suburban communities. Instead, a cooperative system model is in place to allow interoperation between county and municipal libraries.
Public libraries in Cardiff are owned and operated by Cardiff Council. There are 20 public libraries in the capital of Wales, the largest of which is Cardiff Central Library. A mobile library service is also provided. In 2018/19, there were almost 91,000 Cardiff residents, around 25% of the city's population, who borrowed an item from a municipal library. Increases in visits, active borrowers and library members have taken place during 18/19 as the service continues to grow in popularity with Cardiff's citizens.
The Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL) is a public library system based in Hillsborough County, Florida. THPL is part of two larger library networks, the Tampa Bay Library Consortium, and the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative which includes Temple Terrace Public Library in Temple Terrace, Florida, and Bruton Memorial Library in Plant City, Florida. There are 33 branches of the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative. Services provided by the THPL include internet access, public meeting room spaces, interlibrary loans, a Bookmobile, a Cybermobile for Spanish speakers, technology classes, adult literacy programs, and downloadable eBooks. Drive-thru windows for returns and hold pick-ups are located at the Jimmie B. Keel and the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Libraries. In 2017, THPL introduced the new HAAL Pass, which gives access to certain library resources to all students in the Hillsborough County Public Schools System. Students use their student ID number to use different online databases, borrow up to three physical items and read eBooks. The Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System is also a part of Hillsborough County government. On January 1, 2018, the library cooperative became one of the largest in the country to go fine free. Overdue fees for borrowed materials were eliminated with the implementation of the "Just Bring It Back" initiative. In 2019 the cooperative received the FLA Library of the Year Award. Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library was recognized for its community focused initiatives as it "reorganized its staffing model and eliminated overdue fines, yielding $1 million in savings while increasing access to library resources and expanding opportunities for community engagement through unique, scalable programs."
The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Boynton Beach, Florida. Its stated mission is to improve the quality of life of those residing in and around Palm Beach County, Florida, by promoting and achieving literacy. The ultimate goal of the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, is to ensure that every child and every adult in Palm Beach County becomes a reader. One in seven adults in Palm Beach County is unable to read and understand information found in books, newspapers, magazines, brochures and manuals. The organization's operates with the assistance of over 9,000 volunteers. In 2013, the Literacy Coalition provided services to more than 25,000 adults, to children and families.
The Delray Beach Public Library is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)3 library located in Delray Beach, FL in Palm Beach County, FL. The library is funded through public and private partnerships and is not a part of government.
Edina Library is a branch of Hennepin County Library serving Edina, Minnesota, United States.
The Manatee County Public Library is a public library that provides services and resources to the communities and visitors of Manatee County. It is a division of the Manatee County Government's Community and Veterans Services Department located in Manatee County, Florida. The library system provides patrons with in-person resources such as books, movies, and music, as well as online databases to access e-books, e-audiobooks, journal articles, magazines, and other resources. Library services include free events for the public, one-on-one learning sessions, and computers and other technological equipment available for public use. Library cards are provided at no charge to those who reside, own property, attend school, or work in Manatee County.
The North Palm Beach Public Library is a public library in North Palm Beach, Florida. The library is an independent library in Palm Beach County and is not a part of library system. The library circulates approximately 48,000 items per year. The library services 12,177 residents.
