Manuel Torres Bueno was a Mexican politician, lawyer, and jefe (leader) of the National Synarchist Union. Bueno would lead the organization during the height of its membership and activity. His tenure as leader of the National Synarchist Union was a period of ideological instability which would ultimately lead to the fracture of the organization. [1] [2]
A lawyer by profession,Torres Bueno abandoned his practice in December 1941 after Salvador Abascal selected him as his successor in October. Abascal left the Union to start a sinarquista colony in Baja California. [2] He assumed the position on December 13. [1] As leader he sought to define the movement along more moderate lines than his predecessor. [3] Continuing the themes of anti-communism and opposition to liberal democracy,Torres Bueno argued that fascism and Nazism were equally dangerous to the "Christian Order" that he sought to establish in Mexico. [4] He saw this order, which he also called "Christian democracy" despite its differences from that concept,as being based on a plot of land for each family that had been afforded legal recognition. [5] His comparatively moderate views,as well as Torres Bueno's desire to consider changing the Union into a political party, saw Abascal leave the movement altogether and he was soon joined by the brothers Jose and Alfonso Truebas Olivares, the movement's two leading ideologues. [6]
Under his leadership the UNS fell into disarray and factionalism, even leading to a public fist fight between Torres Bueno and a rival for power,Carlos Athie,in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. [7] A ban was placed on the movement on 23 June 1944 which also ceased publication of their organ El Sinarquista and Torres Bueno attracted criticism for his lack of resistance to this law. [8]
He lost power to Athie in early 1945 and soon broke away, heading up his own dissident splinter group. Later that same year he turned leadership of the faction over to his ally Gildardo González Sánchez. [9] Despite having been replaced as leader Torres Bueno received a single write-in vote in the 1946 Presidential election. [10] Torres Bueno was also involved in the creation of the Partido Fuerza Popular as a short-lived political arm of the sinarquista movement.
Although Torres Bueno would drift from politics, the split in the UNS remained in place and indeed has continued to date. The Torres Bueno faction fully politicised in the late 1970s as the Mexican Democratic Party,a group that is now defunct.

The Confederation of Mexican Workers is the largest confederation of labor unions in Mexico. For many years,it was one of the essential pillars of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional, which ruled Mexico for more than seventy years. However, the CTM began to lose influence within the PRI structure in the late 1980s,as technocrats increasingly held power within the party. The National Synarchist Union is a Mexican political organization. It was historically a movement of the Roman Catholic extreme right, similar to clerical fascism and Falangism, implacably opposed to the policies of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and its predecessors that governed Mexico from 1929 to 2000 and from 2012 to 2018. The organization was notably the only explicit right-wing movement in Mexico to garner such nation-wide support and influence during this era. At its peak in 1940,there were approximately 500,000 registered members. Mostly active in the late 1930s and early 1940s,its support for the Axis in World War II damaged its reputation. The organization experienced intense infighting in the mid-1940s which ultimately led to multiple schisms. The organization was dissolved as a political party in 1951 and largely faded into obscurity outside the city of Guanajuato, where it retained some local influence. In the 1980s,the UNS was reconstituted as the Mexican Democratic Party, which held seats in the Chamber of Deputies from 1979 to 1988,peaking at 12 Deputies in the 1982 election but losing its presence in 1988;the Mexican Democratic Party (PDM) dissolved in 1997,though two groups both claiming to be the legitimate UNS continue to exist.

In April 1912 and July 1913,two "unity conferences" were held to discuss and determine the future of organised labour in New Zealand. The events mainly centred around the debate over whether industrial action or political activity should be the means of achieving the aims of workers and additionally to unite the "moderate" and "militant" factions within the labour movement.
