Bernice Pauahi PākīBishop KGCOK RoK was an aliʻi (noble) of the Royal Family of the Kingdom of Hawaii and a well known philanthropist. At her death,her estate was the largest private landownership in the Hawaiian Islands,comprising approximately 9% of Hawaii's total area. The revenues from these lands are used to operate the Kamehameha Schools,which were established in 1887 according to Pauahi's will. Pauahi was married to businessman and philanthropist Charles Reed Bishop.
Kamehameha Schools,formerly called Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate (KSBE),is a private school system in Hawaiʻi established by the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate,under the terms of the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop,who was a formal member of the House of Kamehameha. Bishop's will established a trust called the "Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate" that is Hawaiʻi's largest private landowner. Originally established in 1887 as an all-boys school for native Hawaiian children,it shared its grounds with the Bishop Museum. After it moved to another location,the museum took over two school halls. Kamehameha Schools opened its girls' school in 1894. It became coeducational in 1965. The 600-acre (2.4 km2) Kapālama campus opened in 1931,while the Maui and Hawaiʻi campuses opened in 1996 and 2001,respectively.
The Attorney General of Hawaii is the chief legal officer and chief law enforcement officer of Hawaii. In present-day statehood within the United States,the Attorney General is appointed by the elected governor with the approval of the state senate and is responsible for a state department charged with advising the various other departments and agencies of state government. The Attorney General is responsible for the prosecution of offenses under state law. The Attorney General can only be removed by an act of the state senate. In rare occasions,the Attorney General serves as acting governor in the absence of both the governor and lieutenant governor from the state for an extended period of time.

A career Democrat,Anzai also served as state budget director from 1995 to 1999 and Office of Hawaiian Affairs special counsel from 1990 to 1994. From 1968 to 1970,he worked for the federal government in the United States Government Accountability Office. He was admitted to the Hawaii State Bar in October 1981.

She served as a principal at Kamehameha Schools and helped found the University of Hawaii's Hawaiian Studies Center,leading to a revival of interest in native Hawaiian culture. Later,she led protests against the trustees of Kamehameha Schools for financial mismanagement,leading to their replacement.

Winona Kapuailohiamanonokalani Desha Beamer was a champion of authentic and ancient Hawaiian culture,publishing many books,musical scores,as well as audio and video recordings on the subject. In her home state,she was known as Auntie Nona. She was an early proponent of the ancient form of the hula being perpetuated through teaching and public performances. Beamer was the granddaughter of Helen Desha Beamer. A cousin to Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame inductee Mahi Beamer,she teamed with him and her cousin Keola to form a touring North American troupe performing ancient hula and the Hawaiian art of storytelling. She was a teacher at Kamehameha Schools for almost 40 years,but had been expelled from that same school as a student in 1937 for dancing the standing hula. Beamer's sons Keola and Kapono are established performers in the Hawaiian music scene. Her grandson Kamanamaikalani Beamer is a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and CEO of the Kohala Center. She ran a Waikiki hula studio for three decades. In 1997—indignant at proposals to cut Hawaiian curriculum from Kamehameha Schools—Beamer became the catalyst for public protest and legal investigation into Bishop Estate management,which eventually led to the removal or resignation of the trustees.

Almeda Eliza Hitchcock had previously practiced law in the islands while Hawaii was still a kingdom,but had ceased her practice before the 1893 overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The third woman attorney in Hawaii was Carrick Hume Buck who was admitted to the Hawaii bar in 1924,making Ashford and Buck the only two practicing women attorneys in the territory as of that date.
