Marie Crous

Marie Crous (fl. 1641) was a French mathematician. She is known for two publications: a 1636 study in which she contributed to the further development of arithmetic using decimal fractions, and a 1641 textbook of practical arithmetic rules. She proposed the introduction of the decimal system in France as early as 1636.

Life and work

Little is known about Crous's life; the dates of her birth and death are also unclear. By her own statement, she was of modest origins. She was the tutor of Charlotte de Caumont La Force [1] , a girl from a noble Huguenot family, and enjoyed the patronage of the salonnière Madame de Combalet, the Duchess d'Aiguillion, a niece of Cardinal Richelieu. Crous's work goes beyond the common arithmetic books of her time. The Advis includes a presentation of decimal fractions, based on Simon Stevin's work De Thiende . She introduced a change from Stevin's work: the introduction of a period (now a comma in many countries) to separate the units from the decimal part, and the zero to indicate that a given position is empty. The Abbrégé is a survey of arithmetic rules, including for use in mental arithmetic. [3] [2]

Crous argues that both her books should be used in conjunction. She presented her work as study material for women and girls who wanted to study arithmetic "out of interest or necessity". The Advis is dedicated to her pupil Charlotte de Caumont La Force. The Abbrégé is dedicated to Madame de Combalet, her patroness. In the preface to the Advis, she proposed the introduction of a decimal metric system of weights and measures in France; this would not happen until the end of the eighteenth century.

Louise (Bourgeois) Boursier (1563–1636) was royal midwife at the court of King Henry IV of France and the first female author in that country to publish a medical text.[1] Largely self-taught, she delivered babies for and offered obstetrical and gynecological services to Parisian women of all social classes before coming to serve Queen Marie de Medicis in 1601.[2] Bourgeois successfully delivered Louis XIII, King of France (1601) and his five royal siblings: Elizabeth, Queen of Spain (1602); Christine Marie, Duchess of Savoy (1607); Nicolas Henri, Duke of Orléans (1607); Gaston, Duke of Orléans (1608); and Henrietta Maria, Queen of England, Queen of Scots, and Queen of Ireland (1609). In 1609, Bourgeois published the first of three successive volumes on obstetrics: Observations diverses sur la sterilité, perte de fruict, foecondite, accouchements et maladies des femmes et enfants nouveaux naiz / Amplement traictees et heureusement praticquees par L. Bourgeois dite Boursier. Subsequent volumes were published in 1617 and 1626, also in Paris.[3]

De Thiende, published in 1585 in the Dutch language by Simon Stevin, is remembered for extending positional notation to the use of decimals to represent fractions. A French version, La Disme, was issued the same year by Stevin.

Jacques Nompar de Caumont, 4th Duke of La Force was a French nobleman and peer, the son of Jacques de Caumont, Marquis de Boësse and Louise de Saint Georges. He held his late father's title from the age of two until the death of his grandfather, Henri-Nompar de Caumont, duc de La Force. Jacques-Nompar very rapidly assumed the title of duc de La Force at the closing of parliament 10 February 1678 and was acknowledged a peer, subject to conversion to Catholicism.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Marie Meurdrac</span> Chemist in the 17th century

Marie Meurdrac was a French chemist and alchemist known for writing La Chymie Charitable et Facile, en Faveur des Dames [Easy Chemistry for Women], a treatise on chemistry aimed at common women. It is through this book that her name has survived to the present day, and scholars have argued that this was the first work on chemistry or alchemy by a woman since that of Maria the Jewess in the late classical period. Historian Lucia Tosi described Meurdrac as the first woman to publish a book on early chemistry. Though she was reluctant to write, concerned about criticism from those who didn't believe women should receive an education, she was a proto-feminist, and believed that "minds have no sex."

Louise-Victoire de La Force (1665-1722), was a French courtier. She was the first lover of Louis, Dauphin of France.
