Mark Andrew Murray (born July 5, 1954) [1] is president of the Meijer chain of stores, based in Michigan. He was the third president of Michigan's Grand Valley State University, serving from 2001 to 2006. [2] [3]

Education

Murray graduated from Lansing Catholic Central High School in 1972. Then he went on to receive his master's degree in Labor and Industrial Relations and his bachelor's degree in Economics from Michigan State University.

Career

Prior to his tenure at Grand Valley, he served in Michigan state government. He acted as the treasurer, budget director, and director of the Department of Management and Budget, as well as the acting director of the Family Independence Agency, the director of the Merit Scholarship Award program, and the Special Policy Advisor to the Governor in K-12 education.

He was also Vice President of Finance and Administration at Michigan State University and a member of the Board of Education in the City of Detroit. During his time as president at GVSU, a number of students believed that he had a strong resemblance with Sam the Eagle, one of Jim Henson's Muppets. His name had been floated as a potential candidate for Governor of Michigan in 2010, but his spokesman denied Murray was interested. [4] In 2013, Murray joined the advisory board of Blackford Capital's Michigan Prosperity Fund. [5]

Louie the Laker is the mascot of Grand Valley State University, located in Allendale, Michigan. The costume of Louie consists of a large cartoonish face with an oversized jaw, a scowl, a blue and white striped shirt, blue pants, a blue captain's hat, and large black boots. He is seen at all football games as well as randomly around campus during events. According to short videos shown at Laker football games, Louie the Laker sleeps on the 50 yard line and dreams of Laker football.

Thomas Joseph Haas is an American academic who is a former president of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and a chemistry professor. He currently holds the title of President Emeritus. Prior to coming to GVSU, Haas served as president of the State University of New York at Cobleskill from 2003 to 2006. In 2018, Haas announced his retirement from the presidency. The GVSU Board of Trustees selected Philomena Mantella as the university's next president, effective July 1, 2019.

Julianne Vanden Wyngaard is a professional carillonist and pianist residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan, who served as vice president of The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA), as well as president from 2017-2019. In a predominantly male and white field, Vanden Wyngaard has distinguished herself through musical and professional accolades.

Margaret Sellers Walker Morris, born Margaret Elizabeth Regular, was an American city and state official, based in Michigan. She was also a professor at Grand Valley State University. She was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 2005.
